2012 Interior Design Trends

Trends seem to come and go and most people are a little hesitant in incorporating them into a space as they don’t want to tire of it when the new onset of trends come along. Fear not, friends, the best thing to do is introduce them in small doses.  Accessories, smaller pieces of furniture, fabrics, feature walls and artwork are the ways to do it.

I have come up with my trend forecast for the coming year and here are the top picks:

1. Black Magic

It’s all about black lacquer this coming year. A shiny, high gloss surface used in China as a go to choice for opulent, carved furniture pieces. It is making a huge come back in design. Working well in both modern and traditional interiors, it adds a fabulous element to any room. Every space needs a little black so why not make it lacquer?

2. Terrific Tufting

Used in traditional interiors for many years, you are now seeing this form of upholstery being incorporated in all sorts of spaces. Whether it’s a tufted sofa, headboard, or ottoman, it will up the luxury factor in any space. Mixing modern and traditional elements has been a trend for a few years now and it really adds the right kind of tension to a space.

3. Rustic Revival

The trend of rustic continues, but this time its less industrial and more along the farmhouse style. Think trestle tables, raw barn wood, and gorgeous rustic lighting.  Vintage elements are key to this look and the more beat up, the better. The scale is large and the feel is casual with a sophisticated edge.

4. Orange

Definitely the IT colour for this year and hot off the runways of fashion and Paris, this colour is making it’s way to the interior design world and making an impact. I’d love to see this colour on the walls in a small space or as accents. Think bold fabrics and upholstery and of course, wallpaper!
