2013 Trends in Outdoor Entertaining

The season for relaxing on the patio, deck or balcony is finally here. Whether your space is large or small, there are many decorating options to add extra stylish and functional space to the great outdoors. The trends at the 2013 National Home Show included upholstered, all-season sectionals featuring colourful, overstuffed cushions and built-in fireplaces and appliances for backyard entertaining. Here’s some of the best ways to top up your summertime fun:

Add to the Conversation

Sectionals are an ideal way to furnish outdoor spaces. The modular designs can be clipped together or easily rearranged depending on the angles and size of your functional areas. It is easy to create furniture groupings to allow for conversation among guests. Sofas, loveseats, chairs and ottomans made with aluminum framing and resin wicker are rust and maintenance free.

Get Playful with Colour

Outdoor lines feature marine grade fabrics with limitless selections for a customizable look. The big design trend this season is colour. You may have a neutral colour scheme indoors but it’s time to go fun and cheerful outside. Brighten your space with orange or blue. Red throw cushions on black upholstery is a hot look for the summertime. Look for mildew and fade resistant fabrics. Most fabrics will stand up to the elements, but cushion boxes are storage pieces that double as tables for another touch of style.

Outdoor Kitchens

Barbeques are not the only outdoor appliances available. Create a complete kitchen with under-the-counter refrigerators, sinks, bars and ice machines. Gormwood Inc. of Richmond Hills designs outdoor kitchens and fireplaces to help customers get more enjoyment out of their backyard living spaces. All weather appliances are constructed of high grade, corrosion-resistant stainless steel and are built to withstand the elements. Outdoor fire pits and fireplaces create an illuminated and warm outdoor experience.

Don’t Overlook the Floor

There is a wide array of outdoor flooring options to pull your patio together. One option is wood deck tiles installed over an existing surface. This non-permanent solution is a great choice for patios and balconies. Another way to define the space is with an outdoor rug. Gormwood specializes in pergolas and decks but also carries a wide selection of Sawgrass Mills outdoor rugs. These weather resistant carpets feel as soft as cotton and are available in a variety of sizes and contemporary designs. When choosing an outdoor rug, look for one that is comforting on bare feet, easy to clean and can withstand the harsh sun.

Balcony Solutions

Small spaces can be turned into stylish outdoor rooms with bistro sets. Choose bar height tables and chairs to see over the balcony. An ottoman or bench can add extra seating and create more storage. Opt for sleek and stylish – overstuffed pieces might overpower the space. Look for sets that fold up for easy storage. When it comes to accessories for smaller spaces, keep the look uncluttered. One large urn might be a better choice than several smaller pots. Choose plants carefully to work with your natural lighting.

Whether you are hosting the next get-together or just want to relax, you’ve got lots of options to create an enchanting space and take it outside.
