3 Steps To Healthier Summer Entertaining

Summer is in full swing here in the city and today at we want to combine the worlds of health and home entertainment in order to give you the inspiration you need to make sure your next summer party is the most delicious and nutrition one yet. Of course, the first thing to consider is your grilling habits. Here’s a recent article on that discussed 4 common grilling habits that could be putting your health at risk!

Let’s take a look at the 3 more tips that will get you there:

  1. Serve Up Some Kale Chips

I am about two share with you two undeniable truths. The first is that chips are pretty much a summer party essential and the second is that kale is the trendiest, hottest and most popular vegetable around. If only there were a way for hosts to leverage these two realities? Oh wait, there is a way, and it’s called kale chips, which are a delicious, nutritious and very easy way to spice up any summer party.

Make Your Own

All you need is a bunch of kale, a tablespoon of olive oil and a tsp of your favourite seasoning blend. I personally recommend a salt-free variety like Mrs. Dash.

1.Pre-heat your oven to 350F

  1. Remove kale leaves from stems. Depending on the size of chip you want, you can further manipulate the leaves.
  2. Wash, dry, season and drizzle with oil.
  3. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until desired doneness


  1. Give A Veggie Burger A Try

Those of you who are regular readers here at will know that a few weeks ago we published an article talking about why excessive consumption of red and processed meats (especially sausages and hot dogs) is not the best choice from a health perspective.

There’s obviously nothing wrong with enjoying those foods when you’re in the mood for them, and they are obviously summer essentials for many of us, but one of the big pieces advice that I give as a dietitian is to be open to similar meat-free alternatives. It also instantly makes you a vegan-friendly host. So what’s the easiest and least painful way of doing this? Simple, give veggie burgers a try!

Breaking Into The Veggie Burger Game

When it comes to veggie burgers you have two options.

  1. Try a popular, well known and simple recipe from a reputable cooking website.


The recipe above, from the Minimalist Baker, is not only fully grillable but can be prepared n less than 30 minutes.

  1. Try one of the many up and coming pre-made veggie burger brands.

The plant-based meat alternative food market is probably one of the quickest growing market segments for the simple reason that more and more people are growing interested in foods that resemble the taste and texture of meat, but don’t contain any.  Yves is a great example of a company with a diverse product range, including veggie burgers, that are bringing delicious and nutritious products to the market that are helping consumers painlessly transition into more meat-free dishes.

The Perfection Summer Smoothie Formula

2 Servings of Fruit

1 medium sized fruit plus ½ cup berries would represent a total of 2 servings.

1 serving of Healthy Fats

1 tbsp peanut butter or other nut butter, ½ avocado, 2 tbsp of flax seeds

1 Serving of Protein

1 scoop protein powder, 1 cup skim or soy milk*, 1 cup Greek yogurt

*Special Note:  I find that many people tend to choose milk alternatives such as almond milk for their smoothies. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with that if you truly prefer it, but keep in mind almond milk does not contain protein meaning your smoothie may not keep you as full or satisfied. It really just depends on what you are using it for.
