5 amazing building innovations

You might not realize it right now, but there are numerous innovations being developed every day that will completely change the way we build, renovate and decorate our homes. Many of these innovations are already here, taking those dreams of future homes out of science fiction movies and making them a reality.

Take a moment to imagine a house of the future. What do you see? How about a house entirely created by a 3D printer, a driveway that can repair its own cracks, or even house paint that can kill diseases? Let’s take a look at 5 of these incredible developments.

Solar Activated Façade (SAF)

Solar activated façade or SAF is poised to completely renovate [Darla – how about revamps] the way we think about heating and cooling our homes. SAF is an innovative cladding system made of glass and wood, which absorbs and stores heat from the sun. This increases the R-Value of the wall itself and reduces the dependency on insulation and even HVAC systems.


Bacteria-Killing Paint

Sherwin Williams has developed a microbicidal paint that has the ability to kill 99.9% of bacteria, including Staph, E. coli, MRSA, and other illness-causing bacteria. The paint takes action within two hours of exposure, and for up to four years with appropriate maintenance.  It comes in the eggshell finish and 550 colours. Recommended household applications include kitchens, bathrooms, and the laundry room.


Self-Healing Concrete

A Dutch research team led by scientists Henk Jonkers and Eric Schlangen have developed a self-healing bio-concrete. The concrete is created with capsules filled with bacillus bacteria and calcium lactate. The concrete heals itself via exposure to water by way of a crack. The water then causes a chemical reaction between the bacteria and calcium, creating limestone which fills in the crack.


3D Printed Houses

In December of 2016, the Apis Cor and PIK companies successfully created a house with a 3D printer. Self-bearing walls, partitions, and a building envelope were printing in less than a day, and the entire project was completed at a total cost of $10,134 USD. This tiny house consists of a living room, bathroom, hall and a kitchen.

With these being the early days of structural 3D printing, we can only image what these companies will be able to produce within the next 10 or so years.
