Renowned interior designer, Rebecca Hay, unveils the 5 tiles trends designers love.
Tile has come a long way in recent years and is even bolder and brighter than before. Here are the latest tile trends that are making splashes in the design industry right now.
- Simple tiles, creative Patterns
Subway tile is still a popular choice for wall tile. The latest trend is taking these simple classic tiles in multiple colours and finding creative ways to lay them out. We are seeing a departure form the simple stacked or brick laid tiles in favour of more unique patterns such as herringbone or pinwheels. This is a great option if you are on a tight budget.
- Marble and Metal
If you’re looking to add some luxury and sophistication to your tile then this trend is for you. Marble mosaic tiles have been popular for several years now and is ever popular with Designers for bathroom floors and accent walls. But the latest and greatest update to this look involves metal inlays. A very modern and expensive look that I am absolutely loving. Brass detail intertwined with exotic marble to create unique patterns is a step above and certainly makes a statement.
- Bold Graphic Porcelain Tile
Porcelain tile is praised for its durability and maintenance free qualities. It’s a favoured choice among builders and designers. Once boring grey or white 12×24 tiles that you would see everywhere, porcelain now comes in so many fantastic bold graphic prints. A great resource with a large selection of porcelain tile is SS Tile and Stone here in Toronto. They have tile to suit every style and function and a great place to visit to see up close all the latest tile trends. I am loving the large scale patterned porcelain tile that mimicks the popular Californian cement tile trend. These are a great choice for smaller areas where you want to make a statement such as an entry or a laundry room.
This is a VERY NEW trend. Terrazzo is a flooring material traditionally made by exposing marble chips on the surface of concrete and then polishing it until smooth. Once popular a few decades ago, it’s making a comeback in countertops and now even in tile. Terrazzo is also one of the most durable tiling materials on the market. Once sealed properly it is impervious to water and stain damage, it doesn’t chip like other tile materials can, and can be used on both interior and exterior applications. We are even starting to see terrazzo look-alikes even in a porcelain using fun patterns.
If you are planning to renovate it can be particularly daunting to choose the right tile that fits within the look and function you desire. Express yourself by selecting tile that reflects your personality. Ultimately there are so many choices that you can find any look with the function you require. Be bold and have fun with your tile and use the professionals at your fingertips to help make the right choice for your needs.
