Who is Bryant Renovations?
Dennis Bryant didn’t start out as a general contractor; he went to university and received an arts degree first so that he could work in childcare. He later decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a carpenter. He grew his business over the years and became a general contractor and has now been one for over thirty years.
Dennis Bryant isn’t as hands on as he used to be, which he regrets as it “was a great form of exercise”, for he now spends more of his time on the managerial side of the work than on site. However, because of his experience on the job he understands all the different nooks and crannies of his work.
Bryant has also appeared on major media networks, such as CBC. He is also a proud member of Renovantage, RenoMark and BILD. He believes in these organizations, stating that “they keep the professionals professional.”
What is Bryant Renovations?
Bryant Renovations operates mainly in the old city of Toronto and south Etobicoke.
Bryant Renovations takes on both big and small projects that have ranged from $15 000 to $800 000. Dennis Bryant often has returning clients or gets referrals from satisfied ones. He says that about 75% of his work now comes from word of mouth or returning customers.
What does Bryant Renovations specialize in?
Bryant does it all: additions, whole house guts, condos, home building and he also offers design services. This makes the renovation project work far more smoothly as you have one company giving you both design and building services. Bryant observes that “often when people work with an outside designer the cost of the project ends up being far more than anticipated when they finally speak to their general contractor,” this, he further says is not a problem with Bryant Renovation. Bryant Renovations works with the client on both design and build aspects with a production manager, who is involved in the costing from the beginning, this means that they work truly within budget as they have both the expertise and experience to know the true costs of a project.
What does Bryant love about his work?
“It’s endlessly interesting and fascinating,” he says. He tells us how learning how to run a business is incredibly engrossing and how he’s happy to learn more about the business side of his job and not just the trade aspect as most other contractors. In fact, 6 years ago he began taking courses in business management from Growth Advisors where he received both individual instruction and class instruction with his peers.
Bryant Renovations is currently working on a Tudor house in Toronto. They are doing a full house high end luxury renovation. The house’s neighbourhood is a planned historical project from the early 1900s and is known for its majestic maple and oak trees. There was a lot of paperwork to be done before Bryant Renovations could even begin the renovation. Bryant Renovations had to consider many issues for this project, such as working with tree protection, getting building permits and sorting out zoning.
Surprises are known to happen during renovations and this project was no different. The day before the contract was signed they discovered that the 90 year old boiler had died while the owner was away (on the coldest night of the year). This caused the entire heating and plumbing systems to freeze and crack, including the radiators, which leaked and damaged the hardwood floors of the entire house.
Bryant Renovations went in and installed a new state of the art heating system and pipes. They also installed new windows, making the house as energy efficient as a new home.
The project encompassed the whole of the house, including bedrooms, the deck and the exterior of the house.
The new kitchen has an eat-in kitchen with an island, an office area and specialized appliances such as a plate warmer.
The bathroom has a frameless glass shower, a steam shower and an air pool tub.
