There is a maze of decisions to keep you on budget when it comes to remodelling your kitchen. EiEiHome spoke to Andrew Bridi of ON Centre Design Build to find out what homeowners should consider that will largely affect the cost of a kitchen renovation. He pointed out five main areas;
Consider changing the configuration of your kitchen for best use of space. You may be limited currently by your appliances, but changing the stove location may require moving the hood fan, exhaust and additionally, electrical outlets or gas supply. Consider that you’ll use your kitchen for cooking, entertaining and eating meals. You’ll want to ensure easy access to sink, storage and supplies to make it functional.
Aesthetics and functionality. size and height are essential considerations for kitchen cabinets, as are style and finish. Choose from many materials and colours in cabinetry, doors and interior finishes such as plain white vs. hard rock maple. Once you’ve chosen your look, select storage such as a “Magic Corner” or pull out pantry. Choose doors and drawer mechanisms, trims, crown moulding and light valances. Depending on your layout, you may also want to consider extra seating with an added island and, of course, don’t forget the countertops.
It’s a good idea to install new flooring at the same time a remodelling. Consider ceramic tiles or cork flooring vs hardwood selections.
Kitchen design experts, like those at ON Centre Design, can help you to choose the right style combination. Determine if your flooring is localized to the kitchen area only or if it impacts other living spaces too.
Ceiling fixtures combined with inside, under- and over-cabinet lighting can enhance your kitchen and provide a bright and safe area for meal preparation.
You’ll want options for mood enhanced areas for visitors and dinner guests. Consider pot lights and accent lighting to make a statement in any part of the room and remember that you may require additional outlets or relocation of switches if you choose to revise your layout.
Appliances and fixtures
Your selected appliances will dramatically impact the cost of your renovation. A sink and faucet alone can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Budget carefully, get expert advice and give plenty of thought to basic appliances and additional fixtures such as a water or soap dispenser, garb-orator or other features.
