Create a playroom that means business

A dedicated playroom is not only a treat for children, but for parents as well. It helps keep the rest of your home tidier, and provides the children with a special place to call their own.

When creating your playroom, you’re going to want to personalize it to suit your children’s particular interests. However, there are some common factors that go in to creating a room that is comfortable, enjoyable and safe. Here are some important details to consider.

Storage

To keep things organized and to make it easier for kids to tidy up once they’ve finished playing, take cues from what daycares and kindergarten classes do and institute a bucket and cubby system.

Seating

Seating is another important aspect of any playroom, but also one that is often overlooked. Remember, it’s not just the little ones who need a place to sit. You’ll want to accommodate aunts, uncles, grandparents, babysitters or other adults who might spend time in the room.

Reading Nooks

Start off by installing book ledges or hanging bookshelves rather than using a traditional bookshelf. The reason for this is that book ledges and hanging shelves display books by the cover and not by their spines. This is very important for young readers, because they select books by the pictures on the covers. You will also save yourself the time it takes to constantly tidy and reorganize a traditional bookshelf.

Place a  chair or oversized pillow adjacent to the books and your little readers will be flocking to that spot in no time.

Art Stations

If your children enjoy colouring or doing arts and crafts, then they might like to have a crafting station added to their playroom. All you need is a simple table and chairs or desk set up, along with easily accessible storage for their art supplies.

Lighting

The best playroom lighting is unobtrusive, either in the form of pot lights or something ceiling mounted. This is especially true if your children are very young, because they could potentially pull or knock an untethered lamp over onto themselves.

Flooring

Children at play tend to sit, crawl and roll around on the floor, so you’ll want to make sure that there are soft spots for them to comfortably play.  If your room is appointed with hardwood, tile, laminate or another hard surface, try adding some padding under an area rug or use interlocking rubber mats to add comfort.

A playroom is a wonderful addition to any home, and designing a space that works for your household is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Of course, if you need to finish your basement in order to claim this space for your children, then the services of a qualified, reputable professional contractor will be required.
