Organization Systems: Custom Made or IKEA, Which is Better?

Storage and organization in your home is important; the choices you make will have a dramatic impact on how much you enjoy your home, how easily you can stay organized and other factors. You have two primary choices here; store bought (from a store like IKEA), or to have closet and organization systems custom made for you. Which is a better option? There are several factors that you need to consider here.

Time is an important consideration. Obviously, if you purchase closet organizers and other systems from a store, then you will simply have to put them together and then put them in place. If you have them custom made for you, then you have to consider how long it will take the woodworker or cabinetmaker to finish them. Going the store bought route is certainly faster, though if you plan effectively, you can have custom made organization systems on hand when you need them.

Cost is often the most important consideration. The initial cost disparity here is great and you’ll pay more for a custom made organization system than you will for something from IKEA or another store. However, this can be deceiving. Over time, store bought items will wear out more quickly. Often, a custom made storage solution will last for the life of your home, whereas a store bought option might wear out in a matter of just a few years. That means that you might pay for a store bought storage solution several times but a custom system only once.

In the world of real estate, the mantra; location, location, location, is well known. However, it also applies in your home. For instance, if you are looking for utilitarian storage and organization systems for a garage, then a stainless steel system from a store might just be the best option. On the other hand, if you want an elegant, stylish solution for bathroom storage or an attractive closet organizer for use in your master bedroom, then utilitarian steel probably isn’t the right choice. Here, a custom solution is the best.

As you can see, there are pros and cons to both options. In the end, having your organization and storage systems custom made depends on your personal tastes, your immediate budget and your usage needs. Custom work is always the longest lasting and the best investment, but it is not necessarily the right choice for everyone. With that being said, custom work does stand the test of time, and can match your needs perfectly.
