It’s the time of year to start thinking about bringing in all of the outdoor tools and furniture. It pains me to have to even put that in words! Even though summer is not quite finished and there are still some great days ahead of us, now is the time to start making a strategy of where to store everything for the winter.
Is your garage up for the challenge?
Recently, I heard a stat that 70% of all homeowners with a garage don’t even have room to park their car in them. I too fall into that category and I blame all of my garden gear and sporting goods. The garage has become the default dumping zone for anything awkward like bikes, outdoor furniture, leaf rakes and blowers.
With an expected ROI of almost 65% according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2015 Cost vs. Value report, having a garage is worth a lot of money. Having an organized garage that shows well is worth even more! Here are my tips on the best way to organize your garage to meet your family’s needs!
Get everything off the ground!
The size of your garage is very important when realizing its true value. Being able to see the entire floor makes a room more spacious. Utilize racks and wall mounting systems to get awkward items like bicycles, garden rakes and shovels up and out of the way.
Our decluttering and organization specialists can provide what you need to get your garage organized so you can tuck your precious belongings away until next season!
Add light!
The biggest downfall of most garages is the lack of light. While saving wall space for storage instead of windows is a great idea, it’s very important to add light fixtures to ensure that your garage is bright. A well-lit garage is important for safety as well. Being able to see any possible hazards is very important to ensuring everyone’s safety.
Invest in cabinets
Like a kitchen, a well-designed garage system combines shelves, counters and cabinets. To often the garage becomes the home of opened paint cans, toxic cleaners, garden chemicals, or even cordless power tool. Look for units that can be locked and secured.
Don’t worry – we’re not suggesting you do all of this work on your own! Instead, use our directory to find a decluttering and organization specialist who has the equipment and expertise to visualize your space and help you determine what you need to accommodate all that stuff!
Customize to meet your family needs
Every homeowner uses every garage differently. Having the ability to customize your storage solutions is key to making any space meet your needs.
For my own garage, I went with a storage systems that allowed me to build and customize based on the available areas. I chose Gladiator GarageWorks to add shelving, racks and storage exactly where I needed it. For your own space, consider choosing a system that allows you grow. Being able to add-on or make changes will give you flexibility in the long term.
If your garage space is low, why not consider self-storage? It’s a great way to keep your belongings protected until you need them again. In case you’re interested, be sure to check out our directory of self-storage professionals!
