When we think about outdoor living, our mind turns to hiring a landscaper to beautify the exterior of the house, or a decking contractor to build a deck. But your outdoor oasis needs furnishing as well, and outdoor rugs are growing in popularity. Dianne Daniel interviewed an expert on the subject and she shares her design tips to makeover your outdoor spaces.
Rugs aren’t just for the indoors
They aren’t magic, but they are ‘flying’ out of stores. Outdoor carpets are steadily growing in popularity thanks to the growing trends toward outdoor living, said Kirsten Korhani, chief creative director, Korhani Home.
“It seems people are spending more money on their outside then on the inside,” she said. Korhani Home started carrying outdoor rugs more than a decade ago. Today, there are so many colours and patterns to choose from, you might find yourself wanting to wear one.
That’s what live runway models did at a recent media event. Models were outfitted in elaborate costumes created from two Korhani Home 2015 outdoor rug collections, demonstrating just how versatile the new styles can be. TV personality Jillian Harris also took to the stage, sporting her new Love Jillian Harris Area Rug Collection by Korhani.
It was all done in the name of fun and goes to show that “you can get a colourful carpet, throw some cushions with it and then you have a fun outdoor space,” said Korhani.
Outdoor rugs: there are endless possibilities
Korhani insists that outside is one place where the sky’s the limit when decorating – literally and figuratively. “Try to be inventive and mix, don’t match,” she said, referring to rugs as “the new art” that can make any outdoor space fun and funky. For example, if you buy accent cushions to go with a carpet, try pairing a medallion or floral print with a stripe.
At the low end are inexpensive plastic rugs that are “cheap and cheerful” enough to be replaced annually. “You can pick your favourite colour of the year and just buy a new carpet,” said Korhani. “It’s less expensive than a t-shirt nowadays.”
At the higher end are larger carpets in stain- and fade-resistant materials that are intended to last season after season. There are even carpets made to look like faux grass (pictured below) – a hit with anyone who wants to add instant greenery to their space.
Chartreuse or pale apple green is the most popular colour for 2015 with Turquoise blue close behind, expected to make an even bigger appearance next season. The chevron or v-shaped pattern is also a big hit, available in multiple colours and styles including the Love Jillian Harris brand’s Cross My Heart carpet which comes in black-white (pictured below) and red-cream with matching cushions.
Side note: The rugs can cost anywhere from $90 to $195 based on size and pattern chosen. If you are having trouble choosing what colour you want for your backyard, we have interior design and decor specialists who can help you!
Keep your rugs looking beautiful
To maintain a larger carpet, Korhani recommends holding onto the original bag for storage purposes. It’s not necessary to do any special cleaning, unless there’s a particularly difficult stain to remove. Otherwise, outdoor rugs are “self-cleaning,” she said. “It usually takes one good rain and then it dries up in half-an-hour and you’re good to go again.”
If you have a small outdoor space…
Not everyone has a large backyard to work with. Korhani is also seeing an uptake in smaller balcony-sized carpets that are ideal for beneath a small bistro set or to anchor a small sectional. To get the size right, be sure to take your measurements ahead.
“A carpet can never be too big,” said Korhani. “I like the carpet to be a little bit bigger. It looks more generous and your furniture will look better.”
