What piece of advice would you give a client working with an interior designer?
1. Be honest about your budget and expectations for the project and communicate that with your designer.
2. Keep an open mind; be willing to explore some design directions out of your comfort zone. You hired a designer because you needed guidance from an experienced professional. If the solution was right in front of you, you would have done it already.
We were contacted by a young couple who were first time home-buyers and also first time renovators! Their home was in Cabbagetown, Ontario. They wanted a full scope renovation, which included the kitchen, dining room, main staircase, upper bathroom and the spare bedrooms. After consulting with the the clients with decided to have Celcon General Contractors do the renovation work. Dianne Leadbetter and Gavin Berman were the design team on this project.
Let us start of by saying older homes are rich with character and often full of surprises. We were very lucky with this project, the bones of this house were built well and aside from needing some insulation and reinforcement (which we all anticipated) there were no costly surprises that came up after demolition. The focus for us was on planning, we needed to make the rooms feel larger than they were as well as create a good flow and comfort level throughout. The house was extremely narrow and a lot of the existing spaces felt crammed and the stairs were very steep with no landings. Every area we designed had to be completely reworked to follow current building code regulations while delivering a beautiful aesthetic.
What made the project a success?
We would say the success of a projects is almost always dependent on keeping an open line of communication and team work. We spent a lot of time on the drawing package and planning out the design details and finishes, which kept everyone on the same page and helped the construction run smoothly. As site questions arose we all worked together to develop the best solutions for the client and the space.
