Designing a Kitchen for Gourmet Cooks

Kitchen design is an important consideration during any remodel or renovation, but it is especially important for gourmet cooks. If you will be renovating your kitchen and plan to use a general contractor, then you should know a few of the more important considerations here.

Form and Function

Form and function are very important considerations. While a gourmet cook will certainly want fine countertops and top-end appliances, there is more to it. Functionality and ease of access is everything here. Gourmet cooks require special consideration in placement of islands and appliances, too.

You should also speak with your general contractor about different appliances that you will need. Obviously, a gourmet cook is going to need some additional equipment in the kitchen. On top of the standard stovetop, oven and microwave, you should consider a steam/convection oven, as well. This provides the best range of cooking options – they can cook with both steam and convection heat, or just one or the other.

You might also consider adding French burners to your kitchen, as well. Not only are they eye-catching, but they can also offer a different cooking experience. With a French burner, you can move your pan or pot from the hottest centre ring to the coolest outer ring (where the temperature is ideal for simmering) very quickly. This helps reduce the problems inherent with overcooking food.

Another consideration that you should speak with your general contractor about is the possibility of adding warming drawers and plate warmers. Both of these can be essential to keeping different dishes warm while others are in the process of cooking.

Don’t Forget the Niceties

Gourmet cooks will also benefit by working with general contractors to ensure that islands are constructed in the best location for easy access to the stove, oven, refrigerator and other appliances. Island construction is very important – this should also provide an ideal surface for food preparation, and might even include a built-in cutting board (or be made of butcher’s block) for the most convenience.

When choosing general contractors to help create a gourmet kitchen in your Guelph home, these are some of the top considerations. Of course, you will also want to ensure that the kitchen can be easily cleaned, that the layout is spacious and well lit, and that you have adequate storage area for cooking utensils, pots and pans that you will need on a regular basis.
