Don’t let bad eavestroughs drag your home into the gutter

There’s a good chance that monitoring and maintaining your eavestroughs is at the bottom of your to-do list. Don’t worry, you certainly aren’t alone.

While you might not think about them very often, your home’s rain gutters and downspouts play an important role in maintaining the safety and comfort of your home. Their job is to direct water away from the roof and foundation. Without them, your home could be subject to costly water damage.

Damage caused by improperly maintained eavestroughs can include:

Roof Damage

If your home’s rain gutters are blocked, rain is unable to be directed away from your home. This means that it will remain in pools throughout different areas of the roof. This can lead to leakage and in turn the need for a new roof.

Garden Bed Erosion

A home’s downspout is intended to direct water away from the foundation and also away from sensitive garden beds. If rain water is allowed to build up in the garden beds, it ruin a portion of your landscaping.

Basement Flooding

Basement flooding is a very common problem that homeowners experience when eavestroughs aren’t doing their job. Not only does water leak through the roof, but it can also seep in through cracks in the foundation.

Eavestrough Breakage

The most common type of damage caused by poorly maintain eavestroughs is actually to the eavestroughs themselves. If the rain gutters are blocked by leaves or debris, the water won’t drain. This means that those thin metal or plastic rain gutters now have to sustain the weight of all of that backup up water. Not surprisingly, this will cause them to bend and eventually break.

Take steps to monitor and maintain your eavestroughs to ensure that they continue doing their job properly. Here are some signs that your eavestroughs are in need of maintenance, repair or even replacement:

  • Excessive debris –If you haven’t cleaned out your eavestrough in a while, definitely make this chore a priority on your spring cleanup list.
  • Leakage –Water leakage from joints or corners is a good sign that some repairs are in order. If left too long, these leaks can erode decking, porch paint and garden soil.
  • Ice dams in winter –When water is building up and freezing, you know it’s time to do something about your eavestroughs.
  • Broken downspout – Keep rain water flowing to the right places. Remember that your garden beds were not meant to handle excessive pooling.
  • Old age –Sometimes age can be a simple indicator that your eavestroughs are due to be replaced. For example, some older eavestroughs are actually much smaller than modern versions. This can be a big deal if you’re looking to add something like gutter guards (perforated guards that keep debris from clogging your rain gutters), you may find that your existing eavestroughs are too small and will need to be upgraded.
