You’ve seen those home improvement show segments: By the end of the show, the this-is-supposed-to-be-easy-and-look-amazing DIY art looks like something your 7-year-old nephew might make. Fortunately, if you’re not so inclined with whipping up art-heavy DIY interior décor, trying out some simple, foolproof methods will see your walls decorated and chic without spending a mint.
Framed Poster Décor
How many of your friends have an original Cezanne hanging in the living room? Have your favourite prints – even that $5 poster you love – matted and made to look chic with a luxe frame. You can try this yourself if you’re familiar with the framing process. Otherwise, it’s off to the frame shop!
True DIY Wall Art
All you need is a ready-to-use canvas, acrylic paints, a paintbrush and painter’s or masking tape from your local arts and crafts store. Choose a neutral paint and one colourful hue that blends with your room, picking one light paint and one dark paint. First, paint the entire canvas with the lighter colour. Once it is dry to the touch, tape off sections into stripes or shapes and paint the desired areas with the darker colour. When the paint is dry, remove the tape and voila! Your graphic art is modern and streamlined. Tip: Purchase a finished canvas without any staples showing, extend the paint around to the sides, as well, and you won’t even need a frame.
Wallpaper as Wall Décor
Frame a sheet of your favourite wallpaper. Seriously -– it is that easy. Flip through books at your local home décor store. You may even be able to snatch a sample piece for a super low price. Throw it into a frame or have it framed professionally and hang it as an accent piece.
Repurposed Interior Décor
Yard sales, estate sales, antique stores -– these resources often hold hidden gems that would look divine in your space. If you enjoy the hunt, spend a day shopping and find a painting that speaks to you and your personal décor aesthetic. Hang it as-is or have it re-framed to suit your taste.
If attempting to hang that art piece all by yourself is causing some major stress, think of the money you just saved and let a professional installer, like a handyman, complete the task – you will be able to truly enjoy your new wall décor and may even learn a thing or two for the next time!
