It’s that time of year when we aim to spend more time outside our homes than inside. But in order to make our outdoor oasis shine, we need to consider our outdoor lighting needs. We spoke with Hanna Taylor of Hotwire Electric, a Toronto-based electrical company that specializes in custom homes and new construction, about landscape lighting options.
Lighting up your yard adds ambience
Whether you want to create a fun atmosphere or a romantic one, the options are endless when it comes to adding light to your outdoor space. From up lights that illuminate trees, to wall washes for fences and decks, lighting can be used to separate your backyard into distinct areas.
Flower beds can also be illuminated with accent lighting. “If you have stonework that’s being done (around a garden), we can create an LED accent that goes straight across the stonework,” says Taylor, an experienced electrician.
Dimmable wall wash lights can be added to a quiet area or pergola to create a romantic ambience and colour changing lights can be used to create a lively atmosphere around a barbecue area. A Hotwire expert can help you decide where outdoor lighting can be integrated into your backyard oasis.
Avoiding yard damage
While incorporating lighting into your backyard or patio is best done from scratch, that doesn’t mean you can’t add lighting to an existing garden or space. “If you already have a garden, it’s more difficult because we need to dig around what you already have,” says Taylor.
When adding lighting to an existing landscaped yard, Taylor recommends working with an experienced professional. “You want to make sure you hire a professional that’s not going to cause damage to what you already have in place,” she says.
When designing landscape lighting, Hotwire Electric will consult with your landscape architect to ensure your vision is executed with minimal disruption.
Make your pool the focal point of your backyard with lighting. “When you’re installing the pool, you have to decide what kind of lighting you’re getting inside the pool,” says Taylor.
Colour changing LED lights that switch from purple to blue to green are becoming increasingly popular, replacing the old-school plain white lights.
“Imagine you’re having dinner outside and it’s all dark and then you illuminate your pool and it’s glowing in different colours,” says Taylor.
Of course, Hotwire Electric can help you with interior lighting, electrical for custom builds and more. Take a look at this video and see all of the projects Taylor’s team has worked on!
