Canada’s favourite destination for luxury and custom rugs, Elte, is unveiling the newest addition to join its consummate selection: the Banana Silk Khotan Collection. After years of research and experimentation, Elte has fashioned a new line of rugs using the organic and natural fibres from the stalk of the banana plant, which creates a subtle metallic sheen after being washed and treated. The result? Stand-out rugs that function and add unprecedented style to any room.
Offering an assortment of one-of-a-kind rugs, the Banana Silk Khotan Collection is hand-woven with Turkish knots by artisans in Bhadohi, India, giving the collection an old-world-meets-new-world quality. The colours, designs and sizes of the collection are completely customizable and can be produced in as little as three to four months. A more affordable alternative to traditional silk, banana silk is created from the fibrous stalk of the banana plant, often unused waste. A technique used around the world since the 13th century, the inner 14 layers of the banana stalk are where the silk fibres are found and once separated and extracted, the fibres are joined to create long, continuous threads. The threads are then spun, dyed and woven and Elte has taken these methods to produce an extremely durable, moisture-absorbent, biodegradable rug that can’t be found anywhere else.
“Custom rugs have improved tremendously over the past five years and has moved away from the typical focus on design and colour. Today we’re seeing so many exciting and unusual fibres and textures in everything from Mongolian cashmere, banana silk and bamboo silk to cactus, hemp and mohair as well as different types of furs,” said Jamie Metrick, General Manager and Buyer, Rugs and Broadloom at Elte. “Our relationships with artisans around the world allow us to continuously reinvent our custom and couture rug offerings resulting in truly unique works of art.”
Elte has provided custom rug design services for hospitality, entertainment and residential clients alike for more than 60 years. With a strong reputation for its unparalleled selection and unlimited options, Elte helps designers and their clients create rugs tailored for their individual style and design needs.
