Female-Led Hotwire Electric Showing The Guys How It’s Done

How many female run, owned and operated electrical companies in the city of Toronto can you think of?

Hanna Taylor of Hotwire Electric can only think of one, and it happens to be hers.

Taylor is the director of operations at one of the most successfully run electrical contractors in the GTA.

Hotwire Electric has taken the industry by storm over the past two decades, bringing home a host of awards from reputable organizations such as Home Stars and Trusted Pros while also being recognized as an authorized contractor with the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority). spoke with Taylor to learn more about what it’s like to be a female figure in a male dominated field and how she took Hotwire Electric from a shop of two to a shop of twenty electricians.

“Renovators, builders and contractors aren’t used to seeing a woman in the position that I am in. In order to be taken seriously, I’ve always felt I needed to know more, be quicker and smarter, and I am.” Taylor explains.

In spite of these challenges and a minimal marketing budget, Taylor developed Hotwire Electric’s customer base through word of mouth, reviews on sites like and social media.

“I like to back up my promises with evidence, which is why we use Instagram to display the quality of our completed projects.” Taylor explains.

Hotwire Electric does not shy away from taking advantage of social media and you will often find the #ChangeTheIndustry hashtag accompanying their posts.

“Changing the industry is a big passion of mine. Electrical is historically a very disorganized industry and all too often a one man show.” Taylor explains.

Although she does not come from an electrical background, Taylor combined her passion for changing  the trade industry norms with an extensive background in business, HR and management to take Hotwire Electric to new heights.

“This is a cut throat industry run mostly by men but I believe in honesty, doing good work and having faith that the rest will follow ” Taylor explains.

While she may not be the one with a tool belt on, there is nothing that her tradesmen are doing she isn’t aware of.

“I’m not just a female in the office, I boss around 20 guys and I can’t do that effectively without the knowledge and understanding of the industry that I have.” Taylor explains.

And for those who are wondering what it may be like to work with a female-led electrical company, you will be pleased to know that Taylor takes the creative component of trade work very seriously.

“One of the other hashtags I really like to use is #LightingIsArt. It represents the fact that it’s not just about shoving pot lights into a ceiling, but that with a bit of extra care and consideration, you can really produce exceptional results” Taylor explains.

Focusing on new build and primarily residential projects, Hotwire Electric is a great choice for your next project, large or small.
