Corby Spirit and Wine previews emerging cocktailing trends to accompany traditional seasonal favourites.
The holiday season is upon us, which means a return to time-honoured traditions like eggnog by the fire, festive parties, and spending time with family and friends. This time of year is also a great occasion to put a fresh twist on the season by trying out new drinks, new foods and creating new memories with those closest to us.
Several seasonal wine and spirits innovations are already shaping up for the holidays ahead, including creative cocktails, a renaissance for gin, and culinary infusions.
Here are some of the ideas that the experts at Corby Spirit and Wine Limited recommend checking out:
“For the 2017 Holiday Season, an interesting trend I’m seeing lately is wine used in cocktail recipes – for example the San Francisco Sangaree, which features Merlot and Whisky,” says Melanie Gilcrist, Corby’s Brand Ambassador for Wines.
Let it Snow
“Another fun and festive cocktail innovation is one that I call the ‘Snow Flake’, which you can make by shaking up Jacob’s Creek Moscato and ice cream! Simple and delicious,” says Gilcrist.
Smoke Your Cocktail Glass
“There’s nothing quite like closing your eyes and smelling the aromas of a fireplace to make you feel like the holidays are here. Smoking a cocktail does require some practice, however it’s a sure way to impress your guests at the beginning of the night,” says Spencer Gooderham, Corby’s Canadian Whisky Ambassador.
Here’s one way to enhance a cocktail with a delicious smoky flavour: On a flame-resistant surface, such as a slate presentation plate, place a small pile of hickory wood chips. Using a lighter or match, slowly burn the wood chips until they become embers. Place a glass over the burning wood chips, and the glass will fill with smoke and eventually put out the fire. Mix your cocktail separately, and when it is ready to serve, turn over the glass to release the smoke and immediately pour the cocktail into the glass.
Add flair to traditional dishes with a personal touch. Stew cranberries with Cabernet Sauvignon and serve over baked brie. Infuse a touch of vodka into rosé sauce and plate with broiled shrimp for an updated take on shrimp cocktail. End dessert on a high note by including a few tablespoons of Cabot Trail Maple Cream Liqueur in with whipped cream and dollop over warm apple pie.
Gin’s flavour derives from juniper berries and possesses subtle notes of pine, which pair nicely with yuletide classics. Embrace the renaissance of gin by combining a Canadian-made gin like Ungava with tonic and a wedge of grapefruit for a refreshing aperitif.
No matter how you get in the spirit of the season, it’s important to be safe and enjoy yourself responsibly. Once again, the Corby Safe Rides program will offer safe transportation to and from New Year’s Eve celebrations in Toronto.
