What can I say? New Years is right around the corner and I want to help you ring it in right. Now, party planning may not be my area of expertise, but I have some fun, healthy and easy to prepare snack ideas that will be sure to make your party a hit.
Roasted Mixed Nuts & Seeds
Is a New Year’s party really a party if there aren’t nuts being served, and I don’t mean that literally! Select your favourite variety of nuts and seeds and roast them in the quantity you need at 375F for about 15 minutes. My personal favourites are almonds, sunflower seeds, pecans and pumpkin seeds. If you’re feeling really adventurous, add maple syrup and raisins to the mix.
Looking for a guilt free alternative to a party classic? President’s Choice Blue Menu Tortilla chips come in at a fraction of the caloric value of standard chip varieties and will go great with a homemade guacamole dip (see below).
If you have not tried guacamole before, I am here to make sure you do before the year comes to an end. All you need to do is peel and mash a few ripe avocados and add the juice of one lime as well as salt and pepper to taste. If you’re feeling adventurous, throw in some chopped garlic and tomatoes in there too. Make sure to chill for 30 minutes before serving, your guests will love you for it.
Ryvita Crisps are delicious baked whole grain crisp breads that can be found at your local grocery store and are notably high in fibre. They are also absolutely delicious! Although they may sound boring on their own, but you can dress up them or set up dressing stations for your guests based on their tastes.
Here are my top 3 healthy & delicious options to dress your Ryvita crisps:
- Spread with peanut butter and topped with banana slices
- Make your own bruschetta topping with diced tomatoes and olive oil
- Spread with low fat cottage cheese and topped with smoked salmon
This delicious soybean treat is most commonly served and associated with Japanese restaurants, but can be utilized as a quick, easy and healthy snack at parties. Edamame can be enjoyed warm or cold and are a rich source of protein, fibre and a host of vitamins and minerals that will help keep your guests well-fed all night long.
Home Made Kale Chips
You may have some veggie lovers at your party for whom the tortilla chips and guacamole just won’t cut it. That’s where the kale chips come in. These super healthy delights are the ultimate healthy party treat and are best prepared homemade. All you need to do is tear your kale from the stem and into appx 2 inch pieces which you will drizzle lightly with a tbsp of oil before baking at 300F, ten minutes each side. They should be nice and crispy when they come out, but not burnt.
Ring in the New Year right with these healthy, fun and delicious snacks that will help keep your guests energized until the stroke of midnight and beyond!
