Who are the people behind George Kent Home Improvements?
Wayne Palmer has been in the window and door industry for over 40 years. Prior to working in the home improvement industry, he worked as the Ontario General Manager for Alcan Building Materials which is now known as Gentek Building Products. In 2000, Wayne left Alcan and acquired Minard Home Improvement.
Paul Travis has over 20 years of experience in roofing and in 2006 he joined forces with Wayne to handle the contracts from Direct Energy.
In 2009, Wayne and Paul decided to purchase George Kent Home Improvements. Buying a home improvement company is almost unheard of, but both Wayne and Paul knew that with George Kent’s reputation, customer list and rich history, they were making the right move.
George Kent, the founder of the company, brought forward a strong reputation and a great deal of experience. Not only was he a great contractor, but he also served in the navy during World War 2 and played his part on D-Day. Following the war George returned to Canada and started his own home improvement business.
The George Kent Home Improvements team also has a great deal of experience. In fact, George Kent Home Improvements is very proud of their estimators, “All of our estimators have been with us for at least 10 years and some for over 40 years! They are a very mature group of experienced people.”
What is George Kent Home Improvements?
George Kent has been in business since 1949 and they offer “Sell and install” window and door, siding, roofing and insulation (fiberglass and spray foam) products. In fact, George Kent, the founder, claims to be one of the first to install aluminum siding on a home in Toronto. The company even has a reference letter for work done in the early 60s, 70s, 80s and up to 2011, all from the same customer.
George Kent Home Improvements also offers a private line of windows, called EnerView, that are Energy Star rated for zones C-D, which means that they are approved for installation in Northern Ontario and the Arctic (The GTA only requires a zone B rating).
Wayne and Paul both believe in “Green Technologies” and they practice what they believe. They recently formed a deal with an Energy Auditor to allow their customers to have a reduced price when conducting an energy audit which can help homeowners to “Green” their homes and reduce energy costs.
George Kent Home Improvements is also very involved with their industries associations. Wayne is on the Board of Directors of SAWDAC (Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada), which is the only recognized association on windows and siding in Canada. SAWDAC also works closely with the government to design new training programs for the industry. SAWDAC currently provides training courses known as the “Window Wise Program” ensuring that window installers know how to properly install windows and doors. All of George Kent window installers are “Window Wise” certified.
The roof installers also go through an intensive training process from GAF (the world leader in shingle manufacturing). Only after extensive training can roofers receive their Master Elite Roofer certificate. Less than 3% of roofers in Canada have this certification and George Kent Home Improvements is among this elite group.
George Kent also works hard to maintain their A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
What makes George Kent Home Improvements different?
When arriving at a house, George Kent estimators examine the entire house. For example, if they come in to do a roofing estimate, they will also examine the attic to make sure there is proper ventilation and sufficient insulation, because if the ventilation is poor, the shingles will age prematurely. Not only that, but the company also offers a lifetime warranty on their windows, doors and roofing products, as well as a lifetime warranty on the original installation. “Legally it’s 25 years,” Wayne explained, “but as long as we are in business, we will cover you even beyond that.”
“Customer Service is everything to us,” Wayne explained. In fact, George Kent Home Improvements won the Consumer’s Choice Award for Business Excellence in 2010.
What does George Kent specialize in?

What does Wayne enjoy about his work?
“I love the people I work with and receiving accolades from satisfied customers. Receiving the many testimonials over the years, through the mail or over the phone, and hearing how we have exceeded our clients’ expectations is my greatest reward.”
“Look at the installation warranty that companies offer. It virtually predicts when the product warranty will expire or when they anticipate having problems.”
When you call George Kent for an estimate, they email a list of what makes them different and one of the highlights is their lifetime warranty on the original installation.
