Tis the season for summer house guests to arrive. After a long flight, train or car trip, they’ll be ready for rest and relaxation with some of their favourite friends or family members (namely, you!).
Ensure that your home puts its best foot forward to make those summertime guests feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. Here are a few easy ways to give your home a high impact update that your guests will appreciate.
Gussy Up the Guest Accommodations
Of course, the first order of business should be to prepare your guest accommodations for visitors. If you have a guest room that lives most of its life as an office, playroom or storage space, then it’s time to clear out some of the clutter.
Tidy up the desk and place everything but the essentials in a closet or another room. Your guests may want to use this surface to display small belongings or to charge mobile devices.
You should also relocate bulky toys, seasonal decorations and other clutter, even if that means renting a small offsite storage unit. The goal is to make your guests feel as comfortable as possible, and that means not forcing them to park their suitcases next to Santa’s sleigh or that dusty, disused treadmill you swore you’d use every day.
Once the clutter has been tamed and the room has been cleaned, add special touches, like new bed linens, fresh towels, and a special welcome note. Your guests will also appreciate a welcome basket containing snacks and a reusable water bottle, brochures from local attractions, and a selection of toiletries that they might have forgotten. It’s also a good idea to provide them with the Wi-Fi password, and also a key code, if your home is equipped with electronic locks.
Fix Your Deck
Is your deck a disaster? Before the guests arrive be sure to take care of any loose or damaged deck boards and wobbly railings. You might also want to give it a good scrub. Many people gravitate to outdoor living spaces, so your deck is likely to become a popular hangout spot for out-of-town guests.
Reprogram Your Thermostat
Having out-of-town guests means that your home may be occupied outside of the usual before and after work schedule. This means that your usual temperature control program might not be ideal. Remember to adjust the temperature during the day to make your guests more comfortable.
Update the Guest Bathroom
If you’re really looking to impress your guests, why not give your guest bathroom a mini makeover? It’s easier than you might think.
You can easily add a spa-like feel by clearing out the clutter and applying a fresh coat of paint. Add small details like baskets of folded white towels, small premium toiletries, and fresh flowers.
Sometimes, all you need to give your bathroom new life is the addition of a gorgeous, statement faucet, like this set from The Deckard Collection by Pfister. This softly modern set will add an instant update to a tired bathroom, with its clean, horizontal lines and subtle curves.
