Give the gift of a room redesign

This holiday season, if you have a spouse or child who seems to already have everything, and you don’t want to add another toy, football jersey, or gadget to the clutter, try giving the gift of a room redesign. Redesigning a bedroom, or turning an unused space into a game room, gym, or man cave is a gift that they will appreciate for years to come. You can make it happen in a variety of different ways and at a price point that suits your budget. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Child’s Bedroom Upgrade

If you have a child who is outgrowing their toddler bedroom, treat them to a bedroom upgrade. Repaint and redecorate it in the colours they love, and fill it with décor that reflects their favourite characters or hobbies.

Furniture Suggestion: Brimnes Dressing Table (Ikea)

room redesign

Try including a small desk or dressing table in your redesign, like the Brimnes from Ikea. Not only does it take up the tiniest bit of space at only 27 ½ x 16 ½, but it comes with a lift top on one side and drawer on the other. Whether your little on is into playing dress up, art, or Legos, this table provides the storage and surface they’ll need for hours of play.

Sports Hangout

Do you have a sports fanatic living in your home? If you do, and you also happen to have an unused or underutilized spot in your home, a great way to show them some love is by creating the ultimate sports-themed hangout for them.

Chances are, your sports fanatic has lots of jerseys and memorabilia dedicated to their sport (or sports) of choice. Mining this stash is a great place to start. Have a few things mounted or framed and use them as décor in the room. Or, install bookcases or shelves to be used as places to display these treasures.

Work in the colour palette of their favourite team, whether you paint the room or add décor accents to the space. You can also add a logo-emblazoned accent or add a mural to create a real eye-catching focal wall.

In terms of furniture, you want to create a fun, comfortable space that’s suitable for day to day living as well as gameday gatherings. Ample seating is a must, along with an occasional table or two, since gameday almost always means they’ll need a handy spot to place drinks and snacks.

Furniture Suggestion: Bergan Sideboard (Structube)

room redesign

Keep things like cups, plates, and serving pieces handy on game day by adding a sideboard to the room. On game day, it also makes a great spot to set snack platters and treats. We love the modern look of the Bergen sideboard from Structube. The clean, unencumbered profile would make it a perfect fit in a room filled with sports memorabilia.

Game Room

Create a game room in the basement or other available space makes a great gift for the whole family! Not only does it make a great recreational space, but it’s also fantastic for entertaining guests.

Get your game room off to the right start by bringing in a pool table or poker table. It works as a focal point and is often the most desired game room addition. In fact, if your budget won’t allow a complete game room makeover, simply starting with a basic pool table or poker table (whichever your household prefers) can set the theme of the space all on its own.

Furniture Suggestion: Brayan 3 Piece Pub Table Set (Wayfair)

room redesign

If you can, try adding some extras as well, such as a bar height table and chairs set, bar fridge and sideboard for storage. In terms of seating, we love this Brayan 3 Piece Pub Table set from Wayfair. The drop leaf design means that it can be tucked against a wall on most days, and then extended when you have guests over and require more space.

Craft Room

Is there a crafter in your home? Whether they love scrapbooking, knitting, sewing, or any other arts and crafts, if there’s one thing most crafters have in common it’s a desire for a fully stocked space all to themselves. You can easily make it happen by setting up a workspace, adding some storage, and accent furniture.

Natural light tends to be desired in craft rooms, so you may find a spare bedroom to be a more suitable location than in a basement, if possible.

Furniture Suggestion: Crea Contemporary Writing Deske (Best Buy Canada)

room redesign

Since crafters tend to have lots and lots of supplies, storage is critical when creating a craft room. That’s why it’s a good idea to select a craft table that comes with storage space included. We like the Crea Contemporary Writing Desk found on Best Buy. It may call itself a writing desk, but we know that it was 100% meant for crafters! It features a number of different types of shelves, drawers, and even bars for ribbon storage. Plus its counter height means that it’s comfortable to use whether your favourite crafter is sitting or standing.
