Give Your Home a Fresh Start in 2019

With the holidays here, it means that the New Year is just around the corner. For many of us, that means coming up with our latest New Year’s resolution. These always earnest, but not always kept promises for personal improvement are one of the season’s favourite traditions but aren’t always easy to maintain.

So, if you are interested in coming up with a resolution that’s easier to actually keep, we think that resolving to give your home a fresh start is a great way to go. Here are a few easy ways to clear out the clutter, get rid of the grime, and create a healthier, more organized home in 2019:

Invest in a Good Carpet Cleaner

Whether your home has wall to wall carpeting, a combination of area rugs and hard floors, or a lot of upholstered furniture, a great way to give your home a fresh start in the New Year is by investing in a good carpet cleaner. This is especially true if you have animals living in your home.

When you have your own carpet cleaner at homes, it makes it fast and easy to deep clean carpets and upholstery after spills, pet messes, and in high traffic areas.

We were recently introduced to the Hoover SmartWash Automatic Deep Cleaner, and there’s no doubt that it will be an absolute lifesaver during holiday party season, the muddy days of winter, and all year-round. It features automatic cleaning technology, auto clean motion sensing, auto mixing for optimal cleansing, and auto dry technology.

If You Don’t Use It, Wear It or Love It, Don’t Save It

Aside from sentimental items, there really isn’t a reason to hang on to items that you don’t use. Broken appliances, old books, clothes you can no longer wear, and even old paperwork, should be donated, recycled, or given away. Chances are, when you finally do lose those last 15 pounds, it won’t be during a time when massively flared, ultra low-rise jeans are a thing. And really, wouldn’t you rather go on a shopping spree?

If you find that there are several items or some larger items that you simply cannot part with, you may want to consider renting a self storage unit to free up some storage space at home.

Plan the pantry

The kitchen cupboards are one of the places where clutter really tends to pile up. Between opened and unopened boxes of cereal, snack bars and other lunchtime staples for the kids and yourself, canned goods, plus packages of dried foods like beans, pasta and rice, it’s easy to see why the kitchen pantry can look like it’s been hit by a ravenous tornado.

Most professional organizers will tell you that one of the best ways to get your pantry in order is to ditch all of the packaging. Rather than storing foods in the factory package, invest in a good set of reusable storage containers. Most of these containers are clear, stackable and available in various sizes, making it easy to keep cereals, crackers, rice, pasta and more orderly and easy to find.

For smaller packaged items that don’t need to be sealed, like granola bars, individual crackers, or apple sauce pouches, try keeping them together in baskets on lower shelves, for easy, grab and go snacks that you or the little ones can grab on their own.

Go Natural

Another great way to give your home a fresh start is by clearing out as many chemical cleaners as possible. Natural cleaning is easier than you might think, and generally requires only a few core ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Search the internet and Pinterest specifically for dozens of natural recipes for all-purpose cleaners, disinfectant wipes, toilet bowl cleaner, and much more!
