Holiday decorating to suit your existing decor

Holiday decorations aren’t just about red, green and white anymore. Now, you can find ornaments, garland, and even lights in every colour imaginable. That’s why it’s so easy to work that festive feeling into your home’s existing décor.

To show you how easy it is to add holiday magic to just about any design language, we went out to our local Canadian Tire to find decorations that work with some this year’s most popular interior decorating styles. Their unmatched selection of ornaments and accessories makes it easy to find something that works in every home. Here’s what we found:

If you love the homey, rustic and just all over inviting look of farmhouse or cottage style décor, try adding some of the more homespun-looking items, such as spools of burlap ribbon, nature-inspired ornaments and “hand-knit” stockings. Then work it all into a traditional or neutral colour palette.

To maintain a minimalist aesthetic in your holiday decorating, take the focus off of ornaments and place it on lights.  Our interior decor expert, Margie Doyle-White suggests a minimum of one thousand lights for a 7-foot Christmas tree. You can also add a small strand of battery-operated LEDs to bowls and under cloche-covered plates, to extend the look into the rest of your home.

How to illuminate your Christmas tree and home

You can also opt for monochromatic holiday décor. Try all white, or white and metallic, to add just a hint of holiday flair.

Mid-Century Modern

Working with mid-century modern style cues is an excellent way to infuse the holidays with vibrant colours. Much of what anchored this time-honoured style of holiday decorating was the exuberant use of fun and bright colours.

To achieve a mid-century modern holiday look in your home, indulge in brightly coloured ornaments, geometric shapes, and cool and quirky glass ornaments in wide variety of charming designs.

Glam isn’t so much a décor style as it is a lifestyle (right?!), and what better time to get your glam on then during the holidays?! Now is absolutely your best time to shine, and that includes your holiday décor.

Silver, gold and glitter can be worked into just about any home and look like a perfect fit.  If you want to add a bit a sparkle to your silent night, look for shatterproof ornaments in glittering hues, scaled-back geometric shapes in silver or gold, and translucent glass ornaments adorned with metallic accents.

Of course, even with the new trends that come and go each year, traditional pieces in red, green and white continue to be popular. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in some updates.

Novelty ornaments are a great way to inject some personality into your tree year after year. Try adding decorations that reflect the hobbies and interests of different members of your family. Cartoon characters, sports team logos, cute animals and vehicles can all find a happy home in your traditional holiday decor.

No matter what your décor or holiday style happens to be, you can find all of your decorating supplies, holiday gifts, home entertaining essentials and more at your local Canadian Tire store and Happy shopping and Happy Holidays!
