Home Automation is a Custom Project

The concept of home automation has gone from a science fiction dream to attainable reality over the last couple of years. Now, with products from Google, Amazon and other technology giants making inroads into homes all across the country, home automation is definitely poised to become a major part of the way some Canadians live every day. The question is, is your home ready?

Not All Experts are Created Equal

Having your house rewired is a highly specialized task. Not only is it not something to do yourself, it’s also not something that the average handyman can take care of for you.

“Timing and experience are definitely important in your selection,” the Hotwire experts tell us. “What you may save with a 1-man shop, will cost you in the long run for carrying cost and delays. A large-scale project will need a team of experienced electricians, otherwise what should take 5 days for an experienced crew, will take 1 month.”

There is also the fact that rewiring an older home is a rather complex project. It requires a special set of skills, know-how, and expertise.

“Rewiring a home is harder than [wiring] a new site, as you need to find a way to integrate the old with the new and bring both up to new, electrical code standards.”

The Perfect Time to Rewire

“If you are in the midst of a renovation or addition project, having your walls down already [makes it more convenient] to add comforts to your home, with less damage,” Hotwire explains. “It can give you that option to add those cameras you have always wanted or change some switches to make it a smart home.”

Even if you don’t have home automation in mind at the moment, if you’re planning a renovation, it’s a smart idea to add a wiring upgrade as part of the project.  Since the walls will already be down (in many cases), upgrading your wiring will not cause any further interruption to your daily life.  Rewiring during a renovation also saves money, since no additional demolition or rebuilding will be required.

“The perfect time to integrate new cameras, alarms, lighting design and automation controls [is during a renovation],” the experts at Hotwire explain. “[It allows you to] install everything with the least amount of damage.”
