If you don’t have a special occasion, don’t worry! This is the time of year to celebrate Canadians, as we finally emerge from our winter of solitude indoors. With spring here and summer blooming, it’s time to ready your deck for dancing under the stars, uncork a bottle of chilled wine and hang up those fancy lanterns for a festive mood!
EiEiHome attended Canada Blooms this spring and learned from landscaping and gardening experts how to pull together a fabulous backyard party for this time of year.
Pick a Party Theme
Spring sunshine and summertime inspires many different thematic ideas, but nothing says it this year like bright colours. Plant some early blooming flowers so that your backyard is full of life and luxurious accents. You can also use outdoor draping, seasonal place settings or decorative container gardens in a smaller space to add pizazz.
Music Sets the Mood
Music is one of the most important features of any party — no matter what season. It will set the mood and create the right ambiance for your guests. Music choice will generally open your guests to added conversation or will get them grooving on the dance floor! Encourage a friend or family member with musical talents to play the guitar and begin a sing-a-long. No matter if you have CDs, MP3s or an iPod, make sure music is playing for the duration of your party.
Unforgettable Food and Beverage
Select food and drinks will make or break your party. Pick the right meal with snazzy cocktails and complementing wine, and your party will be the talk of the season. Nothing says celebration like fresh spring salad and a summertime grill. Why not use veggies grown from your own garden!
Container gardens are popular this year and makes it easy for anyone to grow lettuce or a variety of fresh herbs.
Entertain the Kids
Ensure there are age-appropriate games and activities that will keep the kids entertained and busy. A backyard pool or a trampoline can provide continual and affordable fun for family and friends alike. Kids will be busy for hours in an outdoor playground or a simple game croquet or a good old game of horseshoes?
Use the natural environment and set up a kids play area or planting station where everyone can be creative and also learn about gardening while staying busy.
Caution and Safety
Have fun, but be safe. Ask your guests about food sensitivities or allergies before you purchase and prepare food. It will be your responsibility to ensure that your guests enjoy themselves and can get home safely. Plan for a taxi or a designated driver for drop-offs, or make sure you have extra space to accommodate extra overnight guests.
“Spring is a time of renewal and growth,” says landscaping and gardening expert and former HGTV star Denis Flanagan. “It is an ideal time to gather your friends and family and celebrate the return of the warm weather in your backyard garden.”
