Every girl loves a sale and now is the time to shop for outdoor décor to update your home’s exterior.
Last week, I was at my favourite hardware store picking up some supplies for a renovation project and I happened to wander down the outdoor lighting aisle and found fabulous solar mini-flower lights on clearance. I bought nine boxes and came home and filled the three planters next to my main doors.
That evening when the lights came on, I made a note to buy more for our other planters on the back patio and some for my clients. They look amazing at night, and the best part is they were an incredible bargain!
From furniture to dinnerware, barware and accessories, this is the time of year to shop for your outdoor spaces. Here are my designer notes to keep in mind when you’re shopping for outdoor sales:
-Flow your colour palette from inside your home to the patio; this way you are expanding your space and not visually separating the two. When you have your outdoor dinnerware sitting on the kitchen counter it will still look perfectly suited to the home.
-Keep it elegant, whether you are traditional or contemporary, and keep it classy. This year I have fallen in love with the non-breakable plastic that looks like crystal stemware. All of my outdoor dinnerware is white (as is my chinaware for indoor parties).
-Add as much light as possible. The new advances in solar lighting make it possible without having to run electrical wires or trip over extension cords. Wrap the trunks of your large trees with solar string lights, fill your planters with solar-powered twigs and ropes mixed amongst your flowers, set solar globes and cubes in dark corners and next to lounge chairs. Use solar-powered candles to dress tabletops and stairs.
-Don’t be afraid to paint. We often pick up wonderful pots, wall and tabletop décor items in odd or undesirable shades on sale so we bring out the paint and white wash or change the colour of these pieces. A gallon of exterior paint or a few spray cans can do wonders. This year I painted one of my 36-inch pots a gloss white.
-Outdoor carpets help to define a patio space. We often buy carpet tiles and use these to create custom-sized and designed patio carpets. At the end of the season, pull them up, give them a good rinse with the hose and stack into storage for next summer.
-To achieve that resort feel, look for beach towels on sale. Buy a set of matching oversized towels and take them to your local embroidery shop to have them monogrammed. We also look to pick up a half dozen matching throw blankets for those chilly but wonderful fall evenings.
-Patio furniture is also a great buy this time of year. Don’t worry about having a complete matching set; in fact, we try never to do this in our outdoor rooms. A pair of matching chairs, yes, and then a comfy sectional, a coffee table and end tables that don’t look like they came with the sofa. Be more creative and mix it up just as you would your living room.
Live fabulously inside and outside your home this season.
