Your furnace is arguably the most important piece of equipment in your home. Although you may be worried about the cost of replacing your old furnace, upgrading to a high efficiency furnace can save you money. We spoke with Dustin McDonald of Martino HVAC about the financial benefits you can receive by replacing your old clunker with a high efficiency furnace.
Reduce your carbon output
A high efficiency furnace can save you money on your energy bill, while reducing your carbon footprint. A high efficiency furnace will have a high efficiency motor and an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of at least 90 percent, meaning that your furnace uses 90 percent of the fuel to maintain the desired room temperature and turns 10 percent of the fuel into exhaust gas.
“Older furnaces may have an AFUE rating of around 60 percent, meaning 40 percent of your home’s output is not being used to heat your home and your furnace needs to work extra hard to keep your home comfortable,” says McDonald.
In order to calculate your AFUE rating, look for a sticker which shows both the input and output on your furnace. Take the input of the furnace and divide it by the output and voila! You have your AFUE score. The higher the AFUE score, the more efficient your furnace.
Save on energy
When your furnace is properly sized for your home, it runs more often, ensuring a more consistent temperature and greater energy savings. McDonald recommends having a comfort advisor come in to ensure your system is right-sized and operating at optimal capacity.
“People generally don’t realize that there can be considerable savings to be had by ensuring your furnace is right sized,” says McDonald.
You may also be eligible for energy rebates which can lead to substantial cost savings.
Improve your home’s value
If you’re looking to sell your home, having a high-efficiency furnace is a great feature potential buyers will love. With greater demand for greener homes and with electricity prices in Ontario expected to increase substantially over the coming years, having an energy efficient home can really make it stand out from the rest.
“A furnace is an expensive appliance that home buyers don’t want to have to spend on, having one already in place makes your home that much more attractive” says McDonald.
