Creating your own fabric headboard is a great idea if your bedroom needs a new look, but you don’t have a lot of money to spend on remodeling or new furniture. When creating your own fabric headboard, you have many options available. All of these options are fairly easy and will give your bedroom a new look and feel. With less than one hundred dollars and one day of work, you can successfully transform the look of your bedroom.
Choose a Shape
The first step in the process of creating your own fabric headboard is to decide on the shape you want. Depending on the time and tools you have, there are many different options available. If you do not have that much time or that many tools, you may want to just cover one big piece of wood with fabric. If you have some extra time to devote to this project you may want to individually cover many smaller pieces of wood with fabric. You can create this headboard to be as simple or as ornate as you please.
Take Measurements
Once you have decided on the shape of your headboard, it is time to measure the area you want it to cover. First, you will want to measure the width of your mattress–you will want your headboard to be at least that wide. Now, you will need to decide on the height of the headboard. Your headboard should be at least twelve inches above the top of your mattress to insure that you will be able to see it above your pillows. Once you have the shape and measurements for your headboard, you should make a pattern for your design.
Fabric
With your pattern in hand it is time to go fabric shopping. When you are creating your own fabric headboard, you have the ability to make it what you want. You may choose different fabric colors and textures to mix together or you may choose to use one color and type of fabric, depending on your pattern. You may want to coordinate your fabric headboard with other linens in your room, or you may just choose a neutral fabric that will outlive your other bedroom linens.
Needed Supplies
Although you do not need many tools, it is important to take inventory and be sure that you have all the supplies that you need before starting your project. You will need plywood or foam board, batting or foam that is two inches thick, fabric, a staple gun, a hot glue gun, a hammer, nails, a level, and scissors. You may also need a jigsaw, stud finder, drill, and screws.
Assembling Your Headboard
Now that you have planned and prepared for your project, it is time to start putting it all together. Begin by cutting your plywood into the shape you want. Next, cut your batting and fabric to fit over your plywood, leaving at least six inches extra on every side. Start by laying your fabric on a flat surface, add the batting on top of that, and then add the precut plywood on top of that. Be sure that all of these layers are lined up correctly and begin either gluing or stapling the fabric to the backside of the board. Trim any excess fabric. Now you will need to attach legs to the bottom of the headboard, attach it directly to your bed frame, or hang it on the wall. Whichever way you choose to install it, make sure that it is securely in place.
