The Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games have arrived! The sporting event is doing more than inspiring our inner athlete – it’s inspiring laundry lounges. This interior designer had the opportunity to design stylish and functional laundry lounges in the athletes’ village. With the right interior designer and furniture pieces, you can make it happen!
Why we should change our minds about laundry ‘rooms’
If designer Karen Sealy’s hunch is right, clothes won’t be the only thing hanging out in laundry rooms across Canada. People will be spending more time there too.
“We always talk about how every party ends up in the kitchen. Now it will be the laundry room,” says Sealy, owner of Sealy Design, Inc., and a regular TV design expert on Cityline and HGTV’s Summer Home.
In preparation for the upcoming Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, Sealy was challenged by Maytag to create the “ultimate laundry room” in the athletes’ village. Her inspiration came from the strength and power of athletes and the result is a room she hopes will change the way people think about their laundry spaces forever.
“So many people are working out, whether cycling, playing golf or running … that we’re creating more and more laundry in our lives, so why not have a room we can actually hang out in?” says Sealy. “It can be a bit of a functional hangout spot with a TV and beverage fridge, not just a little closet tucked away somewhere.”
Sealy’s ultimate laundry room for the Pan Am athletes is structured and symmetrical so that everything radiates from the center.

- The backsplash combines matte and gloss finish ceramic blue tiles, laid in a grid pattern. These tile experts have an eye for colour and can make some suggestions.
- The speckled grey quartz countertops incorporate flecks of chrome to pick up on the appliances.
- To guard against clothes catching on handles, the countertops are overhung to keep edges flush.
- Teal blue scatter rugs add the perfect pop of colour and warmth against the cold concrete floors. Accessorize your new lounge with some stylish accessories from your local furniture shop.
Why this laundry lounge works
The room is both fun and functional, and raises the design bar when it comes to laundry rooms. “It’s amazing to me when you go into a home and the laundry area is so small,” says Sealy. “I feel there’s a real trend in our interiors where we’re doing more and more multi-functional rooms.”
Designed correctly, the laundry room could be the new “heart of the home,” she says. Most people will consider planning the ideal work space when they redo a laundry room, but by incorporating a few design elements to make it cozier and inviting, you just might create a space that makes washing, drying, folding and ironing seem less of a chore.
If you need some help renovating your current laundry room, bring in an expert! We have a laundry list (see what we did there) of general contractors that have the experience and expertise to transform any space.
Rather piling up dirty clothes to deal with later, you can start a load immediately after returning from a sporting event and enjoy your snack right there in the laundry room while catching up on the news. No more lugging heavy clothes baskets to the family room to fold in front of the TV either.
“If you have a space that’s 12- by 12-feet, anyone could recreate this laundry room we’ve done here,” says Sealy. “The idea is you can come and hangout in the laundry room. I like to say, ‘Move over kitchen, the new laundry lounge is here.’”
