Lighting Series: Cookin with Light (In the Kitchen)

The kitchen can get short shrift when it comes to home lighting. All too often it’s a blistering white overhead fluorescent and an under-hood vent bulb over the stove. That’s utilitarian, but baby that ain’t cookin’.

When it comes to tapping the trendy, in what’s become a space not just for prepping food but also entertaining in the home, what’s a fashionable cook to do?

Happily, there are plenty of up-to-date kitchen lighting-design options out there. What follow are some of the freshest designs of 2011:

Peter Pierobon:

Canadian Design Resource flags this wispy whim in the home-lighting realm: a delicate, draped idea that brings a breezy and airy look to your kitchen.

IKEA:

Contrast is the formula in IKEA’s new model kitchen, with organic bulb-like white hanging lights in an otherwise all-black environment. Here’s a video exploring the company’s proffered look at the design conference in Toronto, via CindyDole.com.

LED:

From ceiling mounted puck units to strips that run underneath your kitchen’s cabinetry (and even along the back of wine racks and glass display shelves), LED technology has transformed modern kitchen lighting design. You get complete control of location, intensity, and color, and you save money on electrical bills. A variety of design ideas can be found at this slideshow from LED Lights Canada.

Pendant Lights:

Hanging pendant lights are in, especially models that feature funky shades, like the ones from YLighting. The hottest design ideas feature a pair or trio of fixtures — or more, depending on your kitchen size — all overhanging a central prep or dining island.

Daniel Becker:

Leaving Canada for this example, metal is the medium for this German lighting-design artist. Ultra-modern but timeless, striking in appearance but evocative of what lasts from the past, his studio’s newest Emily designs is an elegant room-changer.
