The time has come for the fun and fantastic inspiration found at your favourite local home improvement shows and expos. Last month in the GTA, we were dazzled by IDS, and up this month the GTA Home & Reno Show promises a weekend that’s bound to get our reno and redecorating juices flowing.
Shows like this offer an excellent opportunity to see some of the latest looks and innovations in home design, and to collect important information about improving your home. However, keep in mind that it’s one thing to enjoy the beautiful interiors, fixtures, and furniture, but another entirely to incorporate this inspiration into the renovation or redesign plans for your actual space.
In the end, the best way to apply your inspiration after a visit, is to make a few preparations prior to attending.
Prepare a Shot List
Rather than snapping photos at random when you arrive, first write out a list of essential photos that you’d like to take. When preparing this list, think about the different projects that you have planned for your home. For example, perhaps you’re interested in creating amore cohesive garden this year. Prior to heading to the Canada Blooms (or other local) show, create a shot list of things you’d like to see, such as water features, hardscaped seating, or particular types of flowers. As you take each type of shot, check it off your list. This way you’re sure to go home with the images you need most.
Write Out Your Questions
It’s always a good idea to make a list of questions before attending a home improvement show. Whether you plan to attend a project Q&A session like the Destination Renovation feature found at the GTA Home & Reno, and National Home Shows in the GTA, if you’d like to talk to a contractor, or simply want to keep your home show visit on track having a list of questions will make it much easier to inform your projects.
Look for Local Contractors
Home shows are a great way to get to know some of the different contractors in the city. To this end, when you attend, be sure to look for contractors who service your local area. Some of the larger shows will have professionals from a variety of different areas, some of whom might not service your area, or may charge more to travel to a home located far from their base. This is why people who live in suburban and rural areas may want to attend local home shows in addition to the big shows. For example, someone living in Oshawa Ontario might want to attend local Durham Region home shows as well as the bigger show downtown.
