You’ve signed a lease or a mortgage and are ready to begin your new life in your new abode, but before you can do that, you first need to move. Packing and moving can be a frustrating and time-consuming process, but it doesn’t have to be. EiEiHome spoke with A & C Moving for their tips on cutting down on time and frustration when preparing for the big move.
Don’t wait until the last minute
Plan your move by booking your moving company well in advance to ensure availability on your preferred date and time.
Save time with a wardrobe box
These tall boxes with a closet rod inside allow you to move clothes directly from your old closet to the box to your new closet without removing clothes from their hangers and are a huge time saver; reducing folding time and eliminating the need to iron every item of clothing once it comes out of the box.
Plastic over paper
Plastic storage bins are not only more durable but easier for movers to move. “They’re all one size so they’re easy to stack. When you go to the wine store and get a hundred different sizes of boxes, the movers have to spend more time fitting all the boxes into the truck,” says A & C Moving.
Label belongings and rooms
Colour code or label boxes and furniture with the name of the room (bedroom 1, bedroom 2) and placing a label above the door of each room. “One of the biggest time wasters is having to track down homeowners to ask where to put things,” says A & C Moving. Labelling effectively means you can start unpacking even while the movers are working.
Keep one open box
For all those last minute items, put one box aside and keep it open until all the other boxes have been loaded onto the truck. A & C Moving sees clients who make appointments with television and internet providers on the same day as the move end up running around or tearing the truck apart trying to locate modems and TV boxes. Pack all of these necessities in the last box. You may even want to take it with you to ensure you have these essentials close at hand.
