Canadian homeowners have enjoyed the beauty and long-lasting durability of siding for many years. However, what most people might not know is that there is another type of siding in addition to the horizontal or sometimes vertical panels that we’re used to seeing.
Last week, Wayne Palmer from George Kent Home Improvement introduced eieihome to the little known world of specialty siding.
When most people think about siding, more often than not, they have a very specific image in mind. However, there is an entire world of specialty siding that offers the look of materials such as stone, brick or even wood, but with the durability and low maintenance that siding is famous for.
“Most homeowners are unaware that these Specialty sidings are available until they attend a Home Show, watch a Home Reno show on TV or consult an architect or designer,” says Palmer.
“The overriding benefit [of specialty siding] is the cost savings vs. real brick, stone or wood,” Palmer tells us. “Secondly these products require little maintenance”.
That means having the ability to add the charm of cedar shakes to your home, but without the time consuming maintenance required to protect them from weather or insect damage. Or, homeowners can enjoy the timeless look and feel of stone, but without the often prohibitive cost.
To add interest, the different styles can be combined, such as a stone look mixed with brick, or even just accents of stone.
The Selection Process
The technology and design behind these specialty siding products delivers a truly authentic experience, both in the look and feel of the product. In fact, it can be quite difficult to tell the difference between the siding and the real stone, brick or wood.
When it comes to choosing the right type of specialty siding, there are quite a lot of different brands, styles and colours available, which makes working with an expert extremely important.
“We can introduce [homeowners] to the various options and give them sample homes in the GTA where they can see some installations,” Palmer says.
Your expert can also talk to you about how the different options are meant to be used.
“Some products are more for accent or complementary, […] where others are meant to cover the entire house”.
George Kent Home Improvement uses photo-based apps that allow them to add colour, siding and even take a home’s measurements all from photos. This makes it easier to get imagine the end result and to get the project started.
