It’s that time of year where holiday party invites start piling up, you’re more than likely hosting a couple get-togethers yourself and schedules are quickly becoming busier and busier. Before the season is in full swing, prepare your home for holiday houseguests using these 6 tips!
Décor and More
We all have holiday décor that we put out for the season but there are a few things you need to take into consideration before you start to decorate your home for the holiday you love to celebrate. Try and put some of your year round décor away to make room for your holiday themed trinkets. There’s nothing worse than having your home feel overly cluttered. Another thing to keep in mind before you set out all your holiday ornaments is to do a clean sweep of your home. Vacuuming and dusting are very important chores to get done, as it will eliminate a build up of dust throughout the coming month, you essentially want to create a clean slake for your décor.

With all the cleaning you’ll be doing, it’s smart to create your own environmentally friendly cleaning products. It’s amazing what a little water, cider vinegar and rubbing alcohol can do. Check the web for the best recipes for comparable cleaning products and save your money this season.
The Coat Closet
Your coatroom or closet is a place we don’t think about cleaning out before the holiday season rolls in. This room is usually packed with coats that we won’t wear again until the spring and shoes that are not appropriate for the winter. Remove these items from the closet to make room for your guests’ coats. You may also want to add a few hangers just in case you have a full house one night.
The main powder room that guests will be using needs to be cleaned the day your holiday houseguests are to arrive. Empty the garbage can, wipe the mirror, sink and toilet and top up the soap dispenser and toilet paper. A great way to impress your guests even more is to add a basket with hairspray, mints, a comb and some hairpins. It shows you’re looking out for them and want to make them feel at home.
In most homes, parties usually gather in the kitchen. That’s where the food is and more than likely, where the drinks are coming from. Tidy your kitchen as much as you can. Wipe down countertops, appliances and windows, clean the floors and more importantly, take out the garbage and recycling. This is very necessary when preparing for holiday houseguests, especially when the garbage and recycling can build up as a party goes on. The last thing you want is your kitchen being engrossed by a funky smell.
Prep for Overnight Guests
Overnight guests during the holidays is inevitable and whether they are planned or not, it’s always good to have the guest room ready for any overnight dwellers. Of course making the bed with fresh sheets and laying out clean towels is a guest room must but why not do a little extra. To make your guests feel even more at home, experts recommend creating a card with the username and password to your wi-fi and leaving a basket in the washroom or bedside table with packaged toothbrushes, sample sized toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant and anything else you can think of. Go the extra mile for your friends and family who may need a place to crash, they’ll never forget the effort you put in to make them feel at home.
