Retrofit or Brick-to-Brick? Replacement Window Installation

Bricklayer laying red bricks.Replacing windows is one of the best ways to ensure that your home enjoys better energy efficiency, and that you are able to improve the lighting in your home, as well. In addition, replacing your windows often improves the aesthetics of your home. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind. For instance, is it better to do a brick-to-brick window installation or should you use retrofit windows? These are very different from each other, and knowing the difference is important.

What Is Brick-to-Brick?

Brick-to-brick window installation refers to installing new windows and window frames – you’re revamping the entire window area, from one side to the other and inside to out. This is a great way to tie your window designs into the design of your garage door, your trim work or your exterior doors. However, it’s also the more expensive option.

Full window installation can be excellent, and depending on the type of windows you want, this might be your only choice. If you go this route, it’s best to work with an experienced window installer to ensure that the job is done correctly. Of course, it might be a good idea for safety, as well, if you’ll be installing windows in an upper story.

Retrofit Windows

Retrofit windows are great options for those on a tight budget. These windows replace the glass in your old window frames, but leave the frame intact. You can actually install these on your own with only a little trouble, but you will need to make sure that you do a good job with the exterior caulking, or your new windows will not be as watertight as you would like.

Retrofit windows will usually require that you use a bit of creative wood trim around the metal window frame in the interior of your home. This can be a good way to tie into the design of your hardwood floors, your doors and other motifs that you might have in your home.

Which to Choose?

For those seeking a total makeover, there’s no substitute for brick-to-brick window installation. However, if you are pressed for time or money, then retrofit windows are the better solution. New windows can be enormously expensive, and retrofit window options can shave off quite a bit of money. The fact that they can be installed by you, with only a few simple tools, makes this an even more appealing option for do-it-yourselfers, and those hoping to save some cash.
