EiEiHome spoke to Paul Smales, owner of NiceKitchen.ca, who has both experience and insights to share with homeowners thinking about hiring a contractor or kitchen reno service pro.
EiEiHome: Why did you become a renovator?
PS: I learned everything about the business from my father, who was a builder and carpenter. I have done all kinds of renovations, from additions to garages to kitchens since 1981.
EiEiHome: Is it easy to become a licensed renovator in Toronto?
PS: To become licensed you have to indicate your specialties on a checklist and then you are tested in each aspect of the work. If you don’t have the qualifications for a job you have to hire a subcontractor. They also do police and criminal record checks, and only recently are other cities starting to follow Toronto’s lead.
EiEiHome: Tell us about the team at NiceKitchen.ca?
PS: I do the preliminary design and we also have a freelance designer on call when needed. I even do the elevation and 3D work before the projects start.
We have a really great staff. Everyone pays the same attention to detail as I do. We’ve got professionals, from subcontractors to office staff – the right team. We subcontract to get the best of workmanship, for example with tiling and backsplashes.
EiEiHome: What do you do about unhappy customers?
PS: I’ve never had an unhappy customer. Most of them are happy to give recommendations or allow potential clients to come in and view the work in their homes. Because of my meticulous attention to detail, I examine every angle and only give my best work.
EiEiHome: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
PS: Our biggest challenge was not having a showroom, but we have one now, by appointment only. Very often we start our work with a home visit and then later on we will bring our client to see the show room.
EiEiHome: What would you say NiceKitchen.ca specializes in?
PS: We specialize in attention to detail and customer service. When we finish a job, it is as close to perfection as can be. My clients are really happy and amazed at the quality and service.
EiEiHome:. What do you want homeowners to know about you?
PS: We stand behind them and our work for forever and a day. We don’t have a limit on the workmanship warranty. The work is only “done right or it’s not.”
