How To Summer Staycation In 2020

You’ve dreamt about your summer vacation all year long. Plans to sail the Greek islands, strolling along the Champs de Elyse. Perhaps whale watching off the coast of Newfoundland or lounging lakeside in the Muskoka’s. Well, this summer, we’re not going anywhere fast. This is the year of summer staycation.

With stay-at-home orders and domestic and international travel slowed to a halt, summer staycation is where it’s at. Sure, we’re all sick of being at home, but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a relaxing vacation within the confines of your house.

Hacks for a summer staycation

With the money you’re not spending on travel, treat yourself to a few luxuries, get creative with your space, and make the most of your staycation.

#1. Check into your 5-stay bedroom

Catch up on a good night’s sleep by making your bedroom dreamy with high thread count sheets, luxury down pillows, and even a new quality mattress. The perks will last long past your vacation.

#2. Indulge in a spa day

Turn your bathroom into a spa with essential oils, fancy soaps, lotions and creams. Then light some candles, put on a relaxing soundtrack, and don’t forget the post-soak plush robe. You deserve it.

#3. Eat like you’re on vacation

Missing fresh seafood from the coast, craving Paella from Valencia, or the wine tasting tour in the south of France? No problem! Say no to sensible meal planning and splurge on all your favourites. Come up with some International themed dinners, must-try wines and cheeses, and order it all in!

#4. Dine al fresco

Set the scene for inspired meals outdoors. Whether a romantic table for two under the stars with a white table cloth, fine china and a bottle of Chianti reminiscent of a Tuscan villa or a Hawaiian-themed Luau complete with tiki torches, limbo and some really good pulled pork, you’ll forget you’re at home!

#5. Turn your backyard into an oasis

Remember you’re on vacation so now isn’t the time to be building your ultimate deck. Here are a few easy ideas to create a space for relaxation:

Lounge –Lose yourself in the tropical breeze hanging in a hammock, or perhaps curled up in an Adirondack chair evoking the feelings of a northern retreat. Set up a swing on your porch, lean back, sip some lemonade, and watch the world go by.

Dip – If you don’t have an in-ground swimming pool, treat yourself to an inexpensive portable, inflatable pool. Available in many sizes, styles, and the always popular heart-shape!

Roast – Nothing says summer nights like a bonfire.  Pick up a wood-burning or gas-lit fire pit, gather around, share some ghost stories, and of course, roasted marshmallows.

Sip – Is it “drink cart o’clock” yet? Get into vacation mode with some fruity frozen beach cocktails such as margaritas, pina coladas, and daiquiris. Invest in a Ninja Master Frozen Drink Maker and a convenient drink cart to keep staying hydrated close at hand.

#6. Fun for the kids (and grown-ups, too)

Keep the kids happy and make their holiday memorable.

Make a splash – Create your own backyard waterpark with an inflatable pool, sprinkler, and array of spray bottles, buckets, and water pistols. Play water balloon dodge ball or toss down a tarp, add some dish soap, hose it down and let the slip n slide fun begin!

Movie night under the stars – Host a backyard blockbuster by hanging up a sheet or consider an easy to use inflatable widescreen. Set up a mini projector with speakers, toss down a few blankets, and don’t forget the popcorn!

Backyard camping – Pitch a tent, pack up the cooler, and toss in the sleeping bags, flashlights and midnight snacks! Get the full camping experience by cooking over a fire (BBQ) and don’t forget the marshmallow and ghost stories.

The most important aspect of a successful staycation is to unplug – literally – from work and the non-stop daily to-do lists. Take a much-needed mental break from this unusual grind, recharge your batteries and stay safe…in your hammock!
