Sunroom or Open Porch: Remodelling Choices

Many different remodelling options can help you enjoy your home more. Many people find that they want to bring the outdoors in a bit more – sunrooms and open porches are the two most common ways to do this. Before you hire a general contractor, though, you need to ensure that you know what you want here. Of course, working with a good contractor will help ensure that you find the best options, but you should know a bit more about both options before you go any further.

Sunrooms

Sunrooms are excellent options for homes. They welcome sunlight in, and can be great places to house flowers and other plants. Whether you are entertaining or simply relaxing with a book, your sunroom can be an oasis of tranquillity and calm in your home. However, there are a few things that you should know here. First, while they do allow in plenty of ambient light, there’s no fresh air here. Second, they can get quite warm during Toronto summers, so you’ll need to make sure that you can cool it effectively. Condensation on the glass is another consideration, as well.

Open Porches

Open porches can be any size, from a small porch large enough to accommodate a table and chairs to spacious ones that can hold several chairs, and even couches and other furnishings. Like sunrooms, open porches get a lot of light. They also benefit from fresh air at all times, where a sunroom does not. However, you should remember that these areas are exposed – there’s no means of cooling the porch, other than a ceiling fan. In addition, it’s exposed to the elements. A hard rain with the right amount of wind will send water onto your porch.

Making Your Decision

Ultimately, the decision here is up to you. You should make that decision based on how you intend to use the space. If you want an area filled with light, but where you can control the temperature, then a sunroom is the best option. If you prefer fresh air, then an open porch is ideal. With either option, make sure you speak with your general contractor about what you want in terms of style, usability and construction features.

Both sunrooms and open porches can be great additions to a home, but you’ll need to make sure that you include your contractor on the plan.
