Taking it outside: How to spruce up your patio & deck

It’s been a long cold winter for most Canadians, but now it’s time to take a look at your patio and see if you’re ready to do some backyard entertaining this summer. spoke to Bart Bremmers of Craft-Bilt to find out what you need to do to get your backyard ready for that summer party.

Spruce Up That Deck

Let’s start with the deck – in what condition are your wood or composite boards? Did you know that aluminum deck boards outperform wood, composites and vinyl and can last indefinitely? And those other products get slippery in the rain. “Look for aluminum boards with embedded crumble in the finish to provide a true non-skid surface that will keep you and your guests safe,” says Bart.

Patio Covers

What if it does rain on your party? “There are two basic maintenance-free ways to cover a patio: a permanent aluminum roof system that stays out all year or a retractable fabric canopy,” says Bart. Permanent aluminum roofs can be comprised of solid aluminum panels or aluminum beams with translucent panels. Either way your party goers will remain dry and cool!

A permanent aluminum patio cover must be designed to withstand the snow in your area, and requires a building permit. It will protect your outdoor furniture. Imagine how much easier your next get together will be when you don’t have to lug furniture in from the garage, or worry about wet cushions. A translucent cover will let more light onto your deck and into your home.

Retractable Patio Covers

Retractable fabric canopies can be attached to your outside wall or sit free-standing on your deck. There are also retractable canopies that that will fit under your existing pergola. Retractable canopies and awnings are an elegant and colourful solutions that show off your personal flair and provide that shade-when-you-need-it, sun-when-you-want-it flexibility. The retracting feature ensures that maximum sunlight enters your home when you’re not using your deck.  Retractable awnings, canopies and tension shades all come with a motorized option which includes a remote control. Tension shades have the benefit of covering large spaces while being less susceptible to wind damage than other retractable products due to their sturdy permanent legs and beam construction.
