The dirt on mud room organization

If you read interior design magazines or follow décor trends on social media, then you’ve probably noticed that mud rooms are very on-trend. To learn more, eieihome spoke to Dino Colozza, Sales Director with Lancaster Custom Cabinets & Closets.

“Mud Rooms have definitely increased in demand and function,” Colozza says. “The essential space, storage and organization that a mud room handles is key to many homes”.

With kids in school and sporting activities, active outdoor lifestyles and chilly winters, the average Canadian home can fill up with a lot of gear.

Thankfully, mud rooms can really help control the clutter. “Lancaster customizes every one of [our] mud room designs around specific customer requirements,” Colozza explains.“If your family or activities demand [different footwear], we gear our designs around shoe storage. If customers have an active lifestyle with various [types of] outdoor wear, we tailor designs around proper hanging storage and shelving”.

In addition to these custom storage solutions, Colozza says that there are certain components that every mud room should have.

“Proper storage for outerwear, kids’ school gear (knapsacks), hooks for hats and scarves, drawers for gloves and smaller items, and a bench for quick seating [are] essential in a properly designed mud room”.

A new home reno trend?
As essential as mud rooms seem to be, they aren’t exactly ubiquitous. Fortunately, Colozza indicates that installing a mud room is a very doable home renovation project. “Having a mud room that is well organized is a true luxury that is attainable by many of our customers”.

In fact, he says that a common way to make room for a mudroom is to relocate main floor laundry facilities.
“Mud Rooms are typically found off of the entry from the garage – the main entry for families with children”.

If your space is limited?
“To properly utilize a mud room design, we always recommend a minimum span of six feet,” Colozza says.mud room

Of course, not everyone has six feet of space to give up. The good news is that Lancaster Custom Cabinets has a solution for smaller spaces as well.

Colozza indicates that smaller bench and storage cabinetry option can work in tiny spaces. “With smaller areas, customers really need to target the key essential storage components they want to tackle,” he says.

“The best and most effective way to get a mud room project going is to contact us today, and we will book an in-home consultation to have one of our space designers come to your home and measure the mud room area.”
