Who is Felicia Gimza of The Expert Touch?
Ten years ago I decided to follow my dream and return to school to study interior design and decorating. Before returning to school I had a long career in the insurance industry where I held a Diploma in Business Administration, a Certificate in Human Resources and earned my Life Licenses 1 and 2.
I went to the Sheffield School of Interior Design and earned my diploma in Interior Decorating and Design in 2003. I have wanted to be an Interior Decorator since I was in grade 9, but after graduating from high school, I decided to take another route. I enjoyed many years in the insurance industry and climbed the corporate ladder. I started out in an administrative role and eventually ended up in various management positions. At one point, I supervised a staff of 40. However, I never lost my passion for decorating, and I always helped out friends and family – as well as completely renovating and decorating my own homes – so when the opportunity arose to go back to school once again and get certified in this field, I jumped at it. I love what I do now and can thank my many years in the corporate world for helping me run the successful business that I own today.
What is The Expert Touch?
I started The Expert Touch Interiors in May of 2002. I started out doing mainly faux finishing, colour consultation and providing decorating advice until I got accredited in October, 2003. This enabled me to get more involved in all aspects of interior design and decorating. I was also one of the first stagers in the West end of the city. I joined The Canadian Decorator’s Association (CDECA) in 2007 and have enjoyed networking with members of my association at various events. In 2010, The Expert Touch Interiors won “Oakville Today’s” Reader’s Choice Platinum Award for Best Interior Design Company. This is the highest award given in each category.
What does The Expert Touch specialize in?
I specialize in Colour Consultations and Custom Furniture. However, I enjoy all aspects of interior design and decorating.
What does Felicia enjoy about her work?
I love that I can turn a not so pleasing, empty or cold and dysfunctional space into something that is so comfortable, enjoyable, warm and inviting to the homeowner that they want to spend all of their time there after I’m done with it. I compare what I do to the Lotus Flower. It symbolizes a very ugly pod at the bottom of a pond and rises to the surface of that pond as a beautiful, unique flower. This, by the way, is why my logo is the symbol of the Lotus Flower.
There have been many challenging projects over the last 10 years, but I will never forget a project I did for a spa in Oakville that took place within the first couple of years of my company’s inception. The client had curved walls and needed some curved furniture designed. It had to be functional, durable and moveable since it was going into a massage room, but it would also have to be able to move out of this room when larger parties were using it. It was awesome when I finally came up with a design that met all of the client’s wishes. However, about 3 months into the project, the company that was manufacturing the furniture went out of business and literally locked its doors to its clients. After many battles with them, including some begging and fancy legwork, I finally got them to finish this furniture for me. After they installed it, they scratched the client’s brand new cork floors, which was yet another hurdle to overcome. The client should be commended for their patience and I’m actually surprised I stayed in business after the whole ordeal!
