Who is Reiner Hoyer?
Reiner Hoyer has been in the contracting and building industry in Canada for nearly 30 years, and before that he lived and worked in Germany for two decades. He started his career in electronic control. However, he decided early on that he wanted to create something that he could both see and touch.
In 2005, he received the Renovator of the Year award from the Home Builder’s Association, which is awarded to the contractor with the highest level of customer service in the industry. He then sold his contracting company, Premier Custom Builders. However, as time went by people kept calling Reiner for advice and help with their renovations. While Reiner was receiving all these calls he was also exploring other business opportunities, so his wife suggested that he start charging for his advice instead of giving it away for free.
What is the Reno Coach?
The Reno Coach incorporated in 2008, and received its trademark in 2011. Reiner, the Reno Coach, sources contractors for his clients on a contract basis. He has a diverse portfolio of contracting partners that he can call upon for their skills or advice, depending on what the project requires, such as acquiring permits or sorting out design issues. The Reno Coach consults with both homeowners and contractors. What he does is not project management, instead it is giving advice on “a need to know consultant basis.”
Reiner offers a one hour free presentation to new clients where he looks over the house and or project so that the client can see the value of his service. “The reality is that the fee is not an added cost, instead it eliminates mistakes, saves time and usually ends up saving the customer money,” Reiner explains. “One small recommendation can save thousands of dollars!” The Reno Coach also sources materials and companies so that the homeowner or contractor can save both time and money as Reiner knows of companies that aren’t in the Yellow Pages.
The Reno Coach is now planning to franchise its services across Canada.
What does the Reno Coach specialize in?
The Reno Coach specializes in high efficiency buildings. Reiner also educates clients on energy efficiency as well as new building techniques as more and more clients are interested in learning about new ways to be more efficient with both money and energy.
What does Reiner Hoyer enjoy about his work?
“I love to build great things,” Reiner tells us. He enjoys being involved in the whole process, especially with his own Passive House project. He also enjoys helping people and teaching them so that they will not be taken advantage of as there are contractors in the business that overcharge and deliver shoddy workmanship. “The renovation business has become a lucrative business that people with little training can enter into.” Explains Reiner, which is why he enjoys informing clients about what they need to know about building and renovation.
Reiner started planning his Passive House project in 2009, and it took over a year to gain a permit. He started building in July 2011 and moved in time for Christmas. There are still a few finishing touches left, but the house is nearly complete. The German Passive House concept goes far beyond Ontario’s building code requirements. The building concept was developed 20 years ago and is one of the fastest growing building techniques in Germany and Austria. His Passive House uses solar tube heating to warm the radiant heating tubes in his concrete floors. He also has six inches of Styrofoam insulation in his walls beneath the stucco. He created a super insulated basement with spray foam, which was sprayed over yet another layer of insulation. The house also has a complex but efficient HVAC system controlled by a unique control interface, the first of its kind in Canada. Once the Passive House is fully completed he will have it certified by the Passive House Institute of Germany.
