As an interior stylist, I get many requests to redesign a home for resale. This begs the question, why do people wait until they’re selling their home before achieving an Instagram-worthy interior? Here are some of my simple styling tricks of the trade that you can try now, using your existing decor and without spending a single dime!
Odd one out:
Have you ever noticed accessories look better in odd groupings? Sets of threes and fives are more pleasing to the eye and appear centered. Your photos, glassware and collectables will never look better!
Even out:
While this principle sounds like the exact opposite of the above suggestion, think “even” in terms of distribution. Ensure accessories are weighted evenly and balanced at each end of the table, bookcase or surface.
Mix it up:
“Shop” your home for accessories that complement each other, visually or thematically. Combine wood, aged metallics, chrome and organic elements to keep your grouping interesting. Set it all on a tray, and voila! Showroom-worthy without spending a dime.
Table-scape:
Introduce one accessory into your arrangement that’s taller than the rest. The tallest piece becomes a beacon that attracts attention and anchors the eye.
Love it or leave it!
Here’s one final, no-fail styling tip that every stylist swears by. Choose pieces that you love, and be selective! It may evoke deep emotion, fond memories or brilliant inspiration. Choose pieces that speak to you, and express yourself.
Experiment, mix-and-match and try new combinations. And at the end of the day, if you love the look, then it will always have a fond place in your home and heart.
