Top 5: Products that grow and change with your family

When you’re choosing furniture for your home, do you have a checklist of criteria in your mind? For example, it shouldn’t take up too much space, must fit into your current home decor and serve many purposes other than its intended one. If so, you’re in luck! Interior designer Lisa Canning talks to us about which products offer style, functionality and will work with families as lifestyle and needs change overtime.

Demands on the modern family are high – so when a product can serve more than one function, I love it. These items stretch my dollar and keep space footprint low – both really essential things for growing families.

Modern Sensibility convertible sofa

This is the Waterloo sofa and boy does it work hard for families. Firstly, every single seat in the sofa has storage built in. Every single seat! For families living in small spaces the extra storage for blankets, toys and board games is so helpful. In addition to the great storage it provides, this sofa is convertible into 20 different configurations. It can be positioned into an L shaped sectional, a chaise, oversize side chairs and even a bed. The flexibility of this piece allows a family to change it up as their needs arise- for movie night or for an overnight guest.

FLOR modular area rugs

Let’s keep it real – kids can be messy (and so can their parents)! For years, I spent so much money and time sending out my rugs for cleaning every time a spill would happen. With FLOR carpet tiles, their modular aspect allows you to take a single piece – and wash it in the sink. This is a huge plus for families as it makes clean up efficient and less costly. From a design point of view, the possibilities are limitless – as the product comes in square tiles, you can arrange and cut them to create unique designs to suit your space perfectly. I have helped my clients create custom runners, large scale dining rugs and graphic kids’ play areas using this product. The website also gives lots of suggestions for area rugs and allows you to design your own using their easy to use rug planner.

In case you missed it: Last month, we did a feature on the benefits of carpet tiles. You should definitely consider them as an option if you’re having your floors redone in the near future. Check it out!

Artemano tree stumpsartemano

This Canadian retailer might not seem like the obvious choice for family friendly products – but let me assure you from experience, it absolutely is. Committed to supporting artisan talent and reclaimed materials, the quality wood and metal items Artemano offers and inspiringly beautiful but also quite durable. Reclaimed woods hide a multitude of sins in regards to mess – small dings and scuffs that come with little people around are easily masked due to the rustic surface quality of their wood products. A favourite accessory of mine are their tree stumps. They make a beautiful visual statement and make a great bedside or occasional table. In a pinch when guests arrive? Pull them up for additional seating.

Resource Furniture

Living in an urban centre usually means space is going to be limited. With condos getting smaller and smaller and lot sizes in the city limited to what they are homeowners have to get even more savvy with their space planning and design. The Ulisse desk is a great example of strategic design planning for small spaces. It starts as a streamlined desk. When you are ready to end your work day, the wall panel folds out of the wall to reveal a bed. Transforming furniture that can suit specific functions in your life is a fantastic way for families to maximize space without sacrificing on style.

Nuna Zaaz High Chair

Design loving families with little ones will love the Zaaz. It’s a high chair with a streamlined design great for modern and traditional spaces alike. It takes up a really small amount of space which is so convenient. Due to its clever design, the seat also boasts lots of flexibility. With a removal tray and adjustable heights, the chair can go from toddler to teen in effortless style. Select from several colours to suit your decor and personality.
