Your backyard can be more than just a play space for kids and a lawn to mow. Transforming your backyard into an extension of your living space means you get to enjoy the comforts of home and your natural surroundings. More and more homeowners are opting to build outdoor kitchens and living rooms to make summer entertaining a breeze, but who you hire can have a great impact on the success of your project. EiEiHome spoke with Paul Napolitano, President of Royal Home Improvements, a residential renovation general contractor in the GTA, about the benefits of hiring a general contractor to renovate your outdoor space.
Start with a plan. An experienced contractor will know the steps to follow. From budgeting through design, permit approval and construction – a renovation contractor will have done it before and will help you plan your project. “When you plan better, you build better,” says Napolitano, “Our Advisors and Managers will guide you through the process.”
Knowledge and Experience. Residential renovation contractors have knowledge that can help you optimize the use and appeal of your outdoor space. Their experience doing outdoor projects means they know the common pitfalls and mistakes. “We know what works and what to avoid.” Says Napolitano. A renovator can assist with material decisions – colour, style, layout – and they will find the material so you get exactly what you want. Hiring a renovator with design partners means you’ll have access to their expert ideas and knowledge of the trends. “The designer and the project manager work together to transform your ideas into a beautiful and functional outdoor living space.” says Napolitano. Residential contractors also have purchasing power, meaning you take advantage of their discounts.
The Design Build advantage. Hiring a Design Build contractor, who can take you from design through construction, means your design will become reality and you’re going to realize your dreams. Continuity in the project team is generally preferable to engaging a designer/architect separate from a contractor. “Working with a team from the start of the project means they know your vision and can execute the design you want.” says Napolitano. Packaging the design and building processes eliminates conflicts that may arise.
Start Early. Napolitano advises homeowners to start planning their outdoor renovation in the spring to maximize the time you get to spend outdoors this summer. “Contractors get busy. By engaging a renovation general contractor now it’s more likely your project gets designed and completed in April and May, leaving you more of the summer to enjoy your new space.”
