What to do about uneven home heating

Uneven home heating is not an uncommon problem. In fact, most homeowners have experienced it at one time, or another. Generally, the main floor is sufficiently warm, while some or all of the second floor rooms are chilly. A chilly basement is also a very common problem.

Oftentimes, this results in the thermostat being turned up, in order to provide more heat to the colder rooms. This is not only a drain on the HVAC system itself, but on your wallet as well.

There are several reasons why a home may not maintain a consistent temperature. While the difference can generally be attributed to the natural rising of warm air and sinking of cool, more often than not there are other problems afoot.

Blocked or shut heat registers

The next time you go into the improperly heated room, check to ensure that you haven’t placed any furniture over the heat register. Also, check to make sure that it has not been accidently closed.

Dirty filters and neglected furnace maintenance

Possibly one of the most common causes of uneven heating is a dirty filter. With furnaces tucked away in utility rooms, it’s easy  to forget that they’re there. However, routine filter changes are necessary to ensure your furnace’s optimal performance.

Regular furnace maintenance is also a very important part of maintaining your home comfort. However, please note, that this is not a do-it-yourself kind of task. Proper furnace maintenance is something that should be scheduled with your local heating and cooling specialist.

Blocked or leaky ducts

Obstructions or openings in your duct work can certainly be at the root of improper heat circulation.

Improper furnace size

A furnace that is too small will not have the power to properly keep your home at an ideal temperature. Whether the heating unit wasn’t properly sized, or if you’ve recently expanded your home’s footprint with an addition, incorrect furnace size is definitely a problem that should be corrected.

Of course, the best way to improve your home’s temperature from top to bottom is to contact a qualified HVAC professional near you.
