When Walls Start to Speak – 5 Symptoms of Infestation

Pests are a nightmare homeowners wish they never have to come across. Not only do they damage items around the house but are also costly to deal with. That is why it is important for homeowners to detect the infestation as early as possible. Doing so will help them save money and get rid of the pest before they settle down properly. In order to do that you need to pay close attention to the following symptoms.

1. “Walls Start to Speak”

Not literally of course, however, if you hear noise coming from your walls then you probably have pests. You usually won’t hear much during the day but at night is when most pests are active. They like to move around in the dark, when it is much more quiet around the house. To detect them, you can put your ears to the walls around your home, listen for movement and any noise that may be out of the ordinary.

The ceiling and the attic, if you have one, are also other locations where pests love to hide. You may also want to keep an eye out or should we say ear out for those.

2. Musky Odor

Those that have a strong sense of smell tend to detect infestation earlier because pests usually have a distant, musky odor. The odor isn’t pleasant so you can easily detect it because it will differ drastically from the rest of your home. Once you get a whiff of it, you need to try to figure out where it originates from.

3. Nesting

As you make your way sniffing the odor, you should eventually come across the nest of the pest. Most pests like rats, find a dark, warm place to nest. This allows them to stay clear of predators and easily move around for water and food. If you are having trouble finding the nest, be sure to look in the cavities in the wall, behind appliances, and other such locations around the house.

4. Damaged Wires and Furniture

Pests such as mice love gnawing on things. They will bite into almost anything they can find so if you find appliance wires and furniture tearing apart, then you have an infestation. Similarly, this doesn’t end with mice, most rodents will end up causing damage to your furniture.

5. Droppings

Droppings inside your home are the final straw of determining whether or not your home is infested. You will come across droppings in different areas of your house, which means that the pest has nested and moves around freely. Depending on the size of the droppings, professional exterminators can tell what pest has infested your home.

For smaller pests like bed bugs, you can try to take care of them on your own. However, if you don’t have any experience dealing with pests then your best option is to contact an exterminator. After all, they have the expertise in dealing with pest infestations.
