Knob and Tube Knob and Tube was the standard method of wiring from the late 1800's to the late 1940's. It is a system of individual copper conductors ran in porcelain tubes through joist/studs, and supported by porcelain knobs. One of the major issues with Knob and Tube is that it is an ungrounded electrical system. Is Knob and Tube Safe? Knob and Tube has been proven over time to deteriorate. There are several causes for this to occur, movement of any kind being vibration or loose connection of devices. Also just touching it can speed the process up. This is one of the major reasons that this type of wiring should be replaced immediately. Being an ungrounded electrical system is a risk you should not take. The major risk of an ungrounded system is the shock hazard. You could run the risk of livening up devices in your house that require a ground... Don't forget Knob and Tube is over 80 years old, how do your joints work at 80! Electrical Panel Upgrade Sometimes called a "rewire", a panel upgrade is when you wish to upgrade your service coming into your house from fuses to breakers, or to upgrade from 60 amperage (which is no longer insurable) to installation of a 100 amperage service. A 100 amperage service is the most common in residential applications. You may also wish to upgrade to a 125 or 200 amperage service depending on your electrical needs.
